[opensuse] Kde 4.2 panel is just not usable
I have problems with my panel "acting up". I've only been using a 4.2 desktop for a little while so I tend to play with the settings and meybe I did this to myself somehow... but it shoudn't be possible: I logged on to find my clock and system tray overlaying the takmanager. I unlocked the panel and tried to drag them to their correct positions but they just kept floating back on top of the task manager. So I deleted the whole panel and added a new one.. and it went on the top of the screen! No amount of clicking or dragging could move it off so I deleted it again (well about 10 more times) till I discovered that if I right clicked on the very bottom of the screen to add a panel it would pin to the bottom. Very intuitive. Then I added a menu button. it went in the middle and would not move left or right but would move a little up and down. I added a taskbar and it went in another row on the panel! No amount of fussing could get these things to align left and right. They appeared centered one above the other. Same for all other things I added. I tried fooling with the alignment settings for the panel .. no luck. I moved the "screen edge" widget... and the panel dissapeared, all my apps got resized and pinned to the top of the screen! Had to kill the xserver and start over (several more times). Well my desktop's been useless for nearly an hour (and I'm working for free on a Saturday ) so I gave up and deleted ~/.kde ~/.kde4 and ~/.kderc (from the text console) and logged in to find the default panel restored. I will refrain from making any adjustments to this thing because it's just not made for humans! wcn -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

All the things you describe sound like the what happened to me after updating to the latest 4.2 Beta builds from the Factory repository. There were a lot of things that changed in the config and you really need to clear out the old settings and start fresh after the update to the latest Beta file (ie the old 4.1.x config file does not play nice with the 4.2 Beta config requirements). You don't need to wipe the whole .kde4 directory.. just two files in there... Stop KDE4, and remove: ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc Then restart KDE4, and all will be back to defaults. Set things up the way you like and it should not break anymore. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's refreshing, otherwise kde4 would have done away with the entire concept of 'upgrading and preserving settings' as well... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. That's useful. I'll try that and see if it breaks when I add plasmoids like battery monitor and rearrange for right-handedness. Oh, the device notifier has stopped working too. Do you have a fix for that short of nuking ~/.kde4 again? -- Quality has to be caused, not controlled. - Philip Crosby Reflections on Quality -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You should also be able to use the mechanism to download and install new Plasmoids now too (don't know if it was working on a recent/previous release). I was able to add a bunch of new Plasmoids/widget and they all work.. woohoo.. progress :-)

No idea on that one. Mine is working fine... just tested here on 4.1.96 and no issues with connecting devices. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

All the things you describe sound like what happened to me when I first installed 11.1/KDE4.1.3 and later wiped my system and reinstalled to get around a whole pile of niggly problems with booting and with device notification. I posted about this but there were no replies. I thought it was "just me" and a configuration error, but it seems not :-/ I tried wiping ~/.kde4 as well and that fixed it ... for a short while. As you say, if you make any change to the panel you are fubbed. -- Superstitions typically involve seeing order where in fact there is none, and denial amounts to rejecting evidence of regularities, sometimes even ones that are staring us in the face. --Murray Gell-Mann (Quark and the Jaguar) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
