[opensuse] Just Installed 10.2: Some Questions
I just installed 10.2. I am using KDE as the default. My questions: 1. Installation Source. During the installation, I was prompted to add an installation source -- http://download.opensuse.org/10.2/repo/oss. I continued only to get the message that "an error occurred while creating the installation source. Details unknown source type for http:// ...etc. I tried this twice; no luck. What is the significance of this failure? Is there some way to fix it? 2. "music" on logging on and off. How do I turn that loud sound off without messing up the general ability to hear music or talk over the net? I can't find the KDE log on manager. 3. The machine seems quite a bit slower than it was under 10.0. Is that just a feature of 10.2 or can I do something about it? Thanks for your help. Dennis J. Network troubles maybe? I just installed 10.2 on a laptop and all the update stuff worked perfectly (unlike 10.1)
2. "music" on logging on and off. How do I turn that loud sound off without messing up the general ability to hear music or talk over the net? I can't find the KDE log on manager.
Open the kde control center, then Sound and Multimedia->System Notifications
3. The machine seems quite a bit slower than it was under 10.0. Is that just a feature of 10.2 or can I do something about it?
Slowness, a feature of 10.2? Hardly. You're most likely suffering from the beagle build in. It's all a matter of personal preference, but IMHO beagle uses far more system resources than it merits. I didn't appreciate the awkward pauses caused by beagle during my online gaming, so beagle was euthanized and removed from my laptop. First of all, be sure you have not network problems . Try to reach that address via browser. Then, you should be able to add the source in YaST. Pay attention to spaces. Don't put spaces neither at the beginning nor at the end.
3. The machine seems quite a bit slower than it was under 10.0. Is that just a feature of 10.2 or can I do something about it?
I don't really think this is a "feature". Checks daemons and processes running firstly. Regards, Jan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Dennis, if you installed from downloaded media, than it is not big problem some mirror that you was redirected failed. Use YaST -- Installation Source and add installation source directly, like: ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/10.2/repo/oss ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/10.2/repo/non-oss ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/update/10.2 or if that fails: ftp://ftp-1.gwdg.de/opensuse/distribution/10.2/repo/oss ftp://ftp-1.gwdg.de/opensuse/distribution/10.2/repo/non-oss ftp://ftp-1.gwdg.de/pub/suse/i386/update/10.2 Also, you may want to look in: http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories -- Regards, Rajko. http://en.opensuse.org/Mirror -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
