[opensuse] Partitioning and image backup with Vista and SuSE
I hope this is enough on topic. I just bought a Compaq notebook computer that has Vista. I would like to repartition it so that I can have a separate partition for data and so that I can later install SuSE. I attempted to repartition with Partition Magic 8 and found it could not properly identify the partition so it would not let me resize. I also could not get Ghost to backup the drive. The first question(s) I have is this: do any of the Linux world partition tools deal with a Vista partition? Has anyone tried a dual boot setup with Vista and SuSE? I was just looking at Parted and qtparted but they seem old and I don't know if they support Vista. The next question I have is about backup (disaster recovery). What tools work with Vista and ext3 for SuSE? In the past I used Ghost (mostly for the Windows side) but when I try to use it with Vista, it just hangs as soon as the image creation begins. I looked at the current Partition Magic and found that it seems Norton has sucked up a good program and killed it. They still sell it but it is the same old version from a few years ago and does not support Vista. I see there is Acronis Disk Director. Has anyone tried that with SuSE and/or Vista? I have a little issue with this part of the page linked above:
Things you must know: If you have more then one hard drive then you MUST connect them all during Linux installation (even if you do not want Linux to touch them). When you install windows xp you can remove those hard drive to force windows to be in (C:\) drive, but in Linux if you remove the hard drive/drives and then install Linux. Then once your done installing Linux and you put those hard drive/drives back, Linux will not start again because of the OS directory will be different. You can fix this problem by playing around with the hard drive jumpers (primary, secondary) and the BIOS boot devices, but the end result might not be what your expecting (specially for those who is using windows with Linux).
"IF" your computer has the right equipment you CAN set up different OS's on different drives with all but the one disconnected. That's how mine is set up. 1) Your computer has to have some sort of boot loader outside any drive. Mine has one built into the bios. 2) You have to have SATA drives. Well....you can have one IDE. This only works on the master IDE drive. It won't work with a slave drive. I have two SATA drives and one IDE. I disconnected everything but the first SATA drive and installed OpenSuSE. I disconnect that drive and connected the IDE drive. Onto this I installed Vista. Disconnected this drive and connected the second SATA drive and installed XP. -- Billie Walsh The three best words in the English Language: "I LOVE YOU" Pass them on! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The parted tools aren't old, as far as I know. I just used them pretty effectively to move one drive to another (which included both ext3 and ntfs for Windows XP partitions). But as far as I know, there's nothing special about a "Vista" file system. It is just an NTFS file system, so any tool that can deal with NTFS should work fine with VISTA. That being said, I have read in a few other places about new computers, esp. laptops, having some kind of special, hidden, 'backup' partition that seems to confused many of these tools. -- Jonathan Arnold (mailto:jdarnold@buddydog.org) Daemon Dancing in the Dark, an Open OS weblog: http://freebsd.amazingdev.com/blog/ UNIX is user-friendly. I had to use the resize that came with vista. Then I was able to install OpenSUSE 10.2 and dual boot.

I have Vista dual booted with KUbuntu. I just let the install process set everything up. No problems. If you REALLY insist on repartitioning the drive yourself use Disk Manager in Vista. Personally, I would just let the OpenSuSE install do all the work. I'm considering Freespire dual booted with XP on another drive, but haven't made up my mind yet. OpenSuSE is on it's own drive and I plan to leave it that way. Kubuntu makes four OS's on this one machine, and whatever I decide for dual boot with XP will make five. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
