Hello, I am having problems getting a Maxtor 5000DV Firewire drive to work with a system running Suse Linux 9.1 Pro. I have disabled subfs (by setting HOTPLUG_USE_SUBFS=no in /etc/sysconfig/hotplug) to simplify troubleshooting and I am mounting the drive manually. The problem is that when attempting to copy a large directory structure (~26 gb) from the firewire drive to the server, at some point in the middle, the drive "disappears" and the copy fails. The drive still shows up as mounted, but when I do an "ls" on the mount point, I get an empty directory. If I unmount and try to remount the firewire drive, mount tells me "/dev/sdc1 is not a block device". I have to reboot the system to get it to recognize the firewire drive again. This problem happens consistently - I can reproduce it every time I try. Following is some kernel syslog output that looks relevant to the problem. Any suggestions? Has anybody else got this drive working with Suse 9.1 Pro? Thanks,
-sjs I'm sure there is a wizard who will give you a complex answer, and tell you how to work around it.. but I also have a firewire drive on my box, and let me suggest a less aggravating solution. Get 9.2.. it solved all those irritation situations, cd's even are ejected w/o fighting w/ them, and it recognized which flash cards I have plugged in apparently by using some sort of serial or "mac" type number. It's removable disc heaven.. and worth the download time, or even better buy
