Howard, What version of lpr are you using??? If I remember right RedHat made an rpm 0.19...... for lpr that got the filters working with networked printers. This was about 8 months ago so I assume it will be in the 4.2 area on there server. I have never tested it though...... Until this change was made the if and of flags in a printer description where ignored by networked printers. If I come across more info I will forward it to the list. Lach Howard wrote:

Reply-To: suse-linux-e@suse.com To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Our printers in the lab here have their own IP addresses; however when I set rm=123.45.678.911 (to the printer's IP address) in the printcap file, it seems to disable any sort of local filter. That might make sense if you're sending a file to a real print queue on another machine, but not for sending directly to a printer.
For example, the following printcap entry was created by YaST, but with an IP address added by hand to replace the "lp=..." field.
lp|aslcolor:\ :rm=123.45.678.911:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/PS_600dpi-letter-auto-color-600:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/PS_600dpi-letter-auto-color-600/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/PS_600dpi-letter-auto-color-600/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/PS_600dpi-letter-auto-color-600:\ :la:mx#0:\ :sh:sf:
This works OK for postscript files, as it simply forwards things to the printer at 123.45.678.911. But no matter how things are set up (i.e., with the varous "ascii" and "raw" entries set up analogously) the apsfilter is not run, so that for example ascii files don't get translated.
I've set up local (e.g., /dev/lp0) printers with no problems, but this has me stuck. Is this ignoring of the "if=..." field a bug, a feature, or am I just missing something here?
Thanks,
