how about one that does +R and -R ( can't make a plus/minus sign here.)
Use the "compose" key combo on any xterm/console (it can be redefined).
[shift][ctrl],[+],[-] (release after ",")
Ie, [compose],[+],[-] --> "±R"
Carlos, That's cool !
It looks cool, but I couldn't make it work. I tried various combinations of:
[shift][ctrl],[+],[-] (release after ",")
but I am doing something wrong as it idn't work :(
I also looked for "man compose", no joy.

Have a look at the '/etc/X11/Xmodmap' file, I think the compose key combination is defined there.
Carlos et al, With that clue, I was lead to "man xmodmap" (ie utility for modifying keymaps and pointer button mappings in X) and "man xev" (ie - print contents of X events). However, I would still appreciate it, if someone would explain how the above key sequence is suppose to works. (my Konsole is using "bash", if that makes any difference.) Gar, Far from being an expert but maybe i can help a little... Via xmodmap you can change the way keycodes are interpreted by your system (as defined in your keymap). What needs to be done is that you tell your system what the compose key is. In my system (SuSE 8.1)) this was not defined until a i added the following to the file .Xmodmap in my home directory. !! Fourth example: Make Menu key on WIN95 keyboard doing Compose !keysym Menu = Multi_key keycode 115 = Multi_key This imakes the useless 'windows' key on my US 101 keyboard the 'compose' key. Then restart X and it should work else enter 'xmodmap $HOME/.Xmodmap' to get it to work a line like this should be part of your .xinitrc already, else add it. <compose> + <a> + <`> should give à press the keys after eachother.
