[opensuse] Install help for Network driver
Hi all: I am running opensuse 12.1 updated to KDE 4.8. This was a new install and still vanilla with no extra repositories outside of KDE 4.8 ones. Recently I installed a new wireless network card, a PCI Exprss Gigibit Ethernet Controller with a RTL 8111/8168B controller. My problem is that after Googleing for Driver Install How To, I have come up with nothing helpful. Could some one help me to install the proper driver. Thanks in advance. It sounds like a fairly standard wireless card, the driver is probably already installed. Why do you think you need to install it? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.9°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I don't know much about the Network Manager, I guess it might automagically know how configure it. The kernel really ought to have the right module (RTL 8111/8168B is not a new chip), but if you do need to install a new module, the procedure is basically: 1) retrieve source code (from Realtek I presume?) 2) build module 3) install module -- Per Jessen, Zürich (15.1°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Is it possible that wireless is not enabled in Network Manager? When you left click on the network manager icon, look in the dialog box that pops up, then look on the left side at interfaces and see if on the bottom if "Enable wireless" is checked.
Mark, judging by the PCI listing Ralph posted, this is a copper gigabit interface, not wirelesss at all. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.6°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi, I haven't installed the specific driver that you are trying to install, but have installed other rtl drivers on my computers at various times. So this will be a generic install email to get you going. First, you need to install some things that will allow you to build the driver. Here is a list that may be a bit of overkill, but will get the job done. gcc gcc-c++ gcc-cpp qt4-devel kdebase4-devel kdelibs4-devel kdevelop4 make automake autoconf libtool kernel-source Once you have these installed, then you have to get the driver. If you have access to the internet you can download it directly onto the computer that you wish to install the driver on. If you are trying to get a wired ethernet driver onto your computer for the first time, then you will have to download the driver on a different computer, then burn it to cd. Once it is on cd, you can use the cd to bring the driver tarball to the computer without access to the internet. You can download the driver from here. http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=5&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#RTL8111B/RTL8168B/RTL8111/RTL8168%3Cbr%3ERTL8111C/RTL8111CP/RTL8111D%28L%29%3Cbr%3ERTL8168C/RTL8111DP/RTL8111E%3Cbr%3ERTL8168E/RTL8111F Once you have the driver, I am assuming that you know how to unpack a tarball. So do that, then open up the directory that results and find the README file. It will tell how to actually install the driver that you have opened up. Realtek drivers used to install with configure, make, and make install, but lately they have been using a shell script to build and install the driver. You will do this in terminal, I use Konsole as the terminal to do this installation. Please note that after you have installed the driver, you are required to reboot the computer. Do this by typing "reboot" and hitting enter in konsole. If you go to the kmenu instead and try to use the kde prompts to restart the computer, the driver installation will mess up your complete opensuse installation and you will probably end up having to do a operating system re-install, before you once again install the realtek driver the right way. I hope that this helps you to get your driver installed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ralph a Gigibit *wireless* card would be very cool but I think you mean a 'normal' LAN with a cable/wire?
If so: Normally the driver should already in the kernel and so in openSUSE 12.1. But there have been some troubles at least with older kernels (I think the fault was already in the kernel sources), compare for openSUSE 11.4: http://forums.opensuse.org/deutsch-german/hilfe-und-helfen/netzwerk/473306-o... (German language but with links for other distributions in English) with a "r8168B" or "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller [10ec:8168] " So you should take a look at what you have (software and hardware): Could you please open a console/terminal and enter (or paste with your mouse) /sbin/lspci -nnk press [Enter] and post the output here in the mailing list to be sure about your hardware especially your card? And the same for the output of lsmod | grep r816* (if and what fitting/not quite fitting kernel module might be loaded) and uname -a (for your used kernel) ? There might be some help available on the horizion without having to compile a driver/kernel module for your card by yourself.... http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=r8168&baseproject=openSUSE%3A12.1&lang=en (to be continued with the search for the fitting kernel module for your kernel version number and kernel flavor...;) Ciao Martin -- openSUSE profile: https://users.opensuse.org/show/pistazienfresser Martin Seidler KIRCHSTR. 11, 65843 SULZBACH (TAUNUS) MOBIL: +49 179 119 2301 Ø FON (privat): +49 6196 40 20 283 Ø FON (geschäftlich): +49 6196 59 236 23 FAX: +49 6196 59 236 24 Ø -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That seems to be all in order - is the network card shown when you do "ip addr"? Hi, Ralph. As you mentioned "Recently I installed a new wireless network card, a PCI Exprss Gigibit Ethernet Controller with a RTL 8111/8168B controller" is not possible to show a wireless because this is not a wireless Network Adapter Card. Unless you have a Wireless Adapter Card with the proper driver installed it will not show anything on Network Manager Applet.. If you write on terminal /sbin/lspci -nnk or su - (it will ask root password) and then lspci -nnk it will show you (anong other devices) what kind of Network Adapter Card and Controller your machine has installed. Any way I will assume you are making reference to Network Manager Applet is not showing your Network options (Wired, Wireless, Broadband, etc.). It seems PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (RTL 8111/8168B) works despite is not showed into the Network Manager Applet (if your machine receive an IP address automatically by DHCP). In case you need to assign IP fixed or static you will need to go via YaST. Please elaborate where is the core of your concern.
