Re: [S.u.S.E. Linux] SAMBA problems
1) you can't ping your Linux box by name: that comes from the fact that you
have a DNS installed on your network and your Linux box' name isn't in the
database;
2) the linux box doesn't appear in the network neighborhood because of a bad
samba configuration (or no samba config at all !): you have to configure
Samba first !!! - or else, it won't appear in the network neighborhood... if
you already have a /etc/smb.conf file, mail it to me - I'll tell you what's
wrong or missing...
If you want more tips about a "NT & 95 vs Linux" network, 'mail with me' ;-)
We have a 80-machines network with a primary (NT 4.0) domain server,
DNS+DHCP+Apache on a Linux Server and many, many 95 & NT (as well as some
Linux) hosts...
Have a lot of fun !

I have just installed Linux for the first time. The network is a tcp/ip Win95 setup. I can ping all others machines on the network by name except my Linux box. I can ping the linux box by ip address. I can also telnet in from the Win95 boxes by ip address. The linux box does not appear in the win95 network neighborhood. Obviously I can't use SAMBA shares until it does.
What am I doing wrong?
