Re: [SLE] Ridiculous RedHat Prices from Australia
You forget one important thing Bruce. RedHat is at least allowing you to download the thing for free off the ftp which SuSE does not. Hence they don't force anybody to buy the packaged deals.

Actually, you can download SuSE for free from the website, too. Granted, there is some lag from the "latest and greatest" (SuSE 7.0 Pro) but then again, have you seen the download for the RH "Secure Web Server" edition on their site? Not only that, but does anyone remember the RH 5.2 > 6.0 (Oops!) > 6.1 (uh....) > 6.2 upgrade path? I do... I was REALLY pissed... going from 5.2 (Everything worked right!) to 6.0 (NOTHING worked right, and it screwed up EVERYTHING on my disks!) cost me about a whole week of down-time. Going from SuSE 6.2 eval to 7.0 Pro cost me about 4 hours, all told on one of my boxen. As for "forcing anybody to buy the packaged deals" I for one like to buy the packaged deals because I can get install support... Not that I need it, mostly (Anyone remember Yggdrasil Linux? That was my first distro...) but there are times that it comes in helpful, like getting my Epson printer set up locally. To each their own, I guess. Oh, and the printed manuals that came with 7.0 Pro are REALLY nice. At 06:54 AM 10/5/00, Purple Shirt wrote:

I went the easy way RH 5.1 > SuSE 6.0 (never looked back to RH after that)
(Anyone remember Yggdrasil Linux? That was my first distro...)
Remember it? I ran across it while looking for some old docs. I was amazed to find it all together and am planning to check the floppys and CDs to see if they are still good. Gotta go before I get all misty eyed. :-) -- Later, Tim mailto:tduggan@dekaresearch.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Well may I kindly suggest you switch to Redhat since they offer "free off the ftp" I do not think no body is forcing anybody it is a free market you don't like the treatment don't use it. If you want to get everything free may I suggest to have a look to Linux from Scratch How-to available free at the internet. This way you can always stay up-to-date and all is free if you really love it call Purple Shirt Linux (don't forget the trademark loyalties) -- Togan Muftuoglu toganm@turk.net -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
What the hell are all of you people smoking? Yes, RedHat allows you to download their distro for free... SO DOES EVERY OTHER DISTRO, INCLUDING SUSE. No, they don't have the 7.0 release on the ftp site yet... they do tend to lag on that, but I'm sure that it will appear there soon enough. Granted, it may not be the pro version... but then again, you won't find RedHat's equivalent (Deluxe or whatever thay call it) on their ftp site either. Quit whining and grow up already... or go spend $150 US on Windows ME and join the millions of other sheep that wallow in the mire of Microsoft (then you'll really have something to whine about.) Yes.

We are working on it :)
Granted, it may not be the pro version...
Why not? Of course it will contain all packages from the Pro versions (sans the commercial packages).
but then again, you won't find RedHat's equivalent (Deluxe or whatever thay call it) on their ftp site either.
Did you notice, how big the European Red Hat CD box is? The Deluxe one ships with 15 (!) CDs. But no DVD... hi i dont know abt u ppl, but for me , i got Redhat 7.0 ( another .0 release -- also buggy ) for around Rs. 200 , that's just abt $4 if i'm right. all it cost me was the cost of the empty cds. What i think ( i'm not forcing u ) is that , once the linux enthusiasts get hold of a release ( the more the better) then it's very easy and simple to sell it to ppl whose money really matters. Actually it's good advertisement for the release itself, the more it's used, the better. Well, i dont know what the problem is right now with Suse in getting the ftp up, but if it is a business strategy, it's just not gonna work cheers cheedu On Thu, 5 Oct 2000, Herman Knief wrote:
