I read an interview by some Novell exec this week that said they were working on the 10.1 update problem and that a fix would be issued the end of the week. Do the SUSE people here know if that update will fix the current updater that does not work or am I going to ultimately have to go through the gyrations that have been explained in another thread(s) here to get any updates -- even to fix the updater? Thanks for any info. I just installed today and if the fix is coming in a few days and the virgin install will get the update I'd just as soon not unistall zmd, etc. Chuck Davis

OK, I've installed everything in that directory (after having to install twelve -devel packages to resolve dependencies) and accomplished this: in YaST's 'Automatic Online Update Setup' module: Selected 'Enable Automatic Update' checkbox Set time to 3:30 a.m. Sunday Selected 'Weekly' checkbox Selected 'Only Download Patches' De-Selected 'Skip Interactive Patches' Clicked 'Finish' and window abruptly closed. Then: KDE Menu > System > Configuration > 'Update Software' bouncing icon... icon loaded in taskbar... error message dialogue: Title: Software Updater - Error "ZMD does not appear to be running." clicked 'Close' and the icon disappeared from the taskbar Anybody know the next step? tia & regards, Carl
KDE Menu > System > Configuration > 'Update Software' bouncing icon... icon loaded in taskbar... error message dialogue: Title: Software Updater - Error "ZMD does not appear to be running." Seems par for the course But better than the times it wants to kill it but can't find to kill so it also crashes.
Anybody know the next step?
tia & regards,
Carl you could try... su. cd /etc/init.d/ ./novell-zmd start

Thanks! The 'Software Updater' windows displayed 'Getting updates list...' 'parse-metadata' ran for about five minutes (viewed via top in shell) 'update-status' ran for two or three minutes I got a rust-red (why not bright red?) SUSEWatcher-like taskbar dot with a white exclamation point in the center Then the 'Software Updater' window listed eight available updates. I clicked Select 'All' then 'Update' The 'Software Updater' window displayed 'resolving dependencies...' A 'Change Summary' dialogue opened asking 'Apply the following changes?' I clicked 'Apply' The 'Software Updater' window displayed 'Updating software...' with a progress bar that actually tracked the installation progress. Eventually a 'Software Updater - Info' pop-up appeared stating 'The update was successful.' I clicked 'Close' and then 'Close' and the normal updater icon reappeared in my taskbar. Look like it works here! :-) And it was easy, too! Carl

hth & regards,
I'm sure it'll help with the packages. I'm not sure about the updater though, it won't shut-down and after re-boot it errored. :( I assume you added the directory into your apt sources, that ought to be easy enough to do. Thanks for the heads up.

No, I didn't add the directory as an apt source, I just did an 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get install blocxx-devel boost-devel curl-devel...' and so on, listing all twelve packages. I believe these -devel packages are simply part of 10.1. As far as the "won't shut down" behavior, you've got to be patient... it goes on for several minutes. I didn't time it, but close to 10 wouldn't surprise me. Carl
