Has anyone here succeeded in using an Ethernet card based on the RealTek 8139 chip with the SuSE version of kernel 2.4.2? I can get it to work just fine with the 2.4.0 kernel and the 8139too driver, but not with 2.4.2 and the 8139too driver. (In fact, the 8139too driver seems to be the only driver provided for this chip in kernel 2.4.2.) The symptom of the problem is that when insmod is called with argument "8139too", either from the bootup code or separately, it gives a "no device found" error. I've switched back and forth between 2.4.2 and 2.4.0 a couple of times, with completely consistent results. I'd like to know if the problem lies in something I did or if there's a bug here. I plan to experiment further by trying a stock 2.4.4 kernel.

Yes, this message is being sent to you from a workstation running 2.4.2-4GB kernel with a Realtek NIC. If you receive this msg it might be working :)

No, rtl8139 is also provided: gergull@mentor:~ > find /lib/modules/2.4.2-4GB/ -name *8139* /lib/modules/2.4.2-4GB/kernel/drivers/net/rtl8139.o /lib/modules/2.4.2-4GB/kernel/drivers/net/8139too.o

I'm using a 2.4.2-GB as downloaded from the SuSE FTP site and rtl8139 module, you could try the following: include the following in your /etc/modules.conf: alias eth0 rtl8139 Then issue the following command: # depmod -a # modprobe rtl8139 Obs: I've just tried removing rtl8139 and loading 8139too and it also worked. rgrds, Bráulio Gergull GetNet Comunicações
