You should always have a swap partition. You never know when a rogue program might start to leak memory and you'll be in trouble if there isn't some slack somewhere. To answer your question more directly, yes you'll get an improvement in regular use. Linux will shift unused programs (or parts of them) out onto swap even when there is plenty of free RAM. Unused programs in memory are a waste - Linux will always try to use your RAM for things like caching, and it is smart enough to swap out sleeping processes in order to make more room.
I have 128 MO of RAM on my Linux system. I don't have a swap partition. Is it worthwhile to have one ? would I get any improvement ? if so, in which case ?
