Hi-- Have any of you ever used Linspire Linux, and if so, what do you think of it? Several very low-cost computers are available with Linspire installed. (I think it's version 5.0.) I'm considering getting another machine dedicated to Linux use. Unlike some on the list, I'm not likely to dump XP in the near future--it really is pretty close to bullet-proof-- but I want to keep my options open, particularly now that MS is exerting very close control over their OS's. --doug -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.323 / Virus Database: 267.8.9/42 - Release Date: 7/6/2005

Hi, I got one of those from Fry's; a duron CPU. I re-formatted and installed SUSE 9.3 Linspire is polished and competant. It is aimed squarely at disgruntled XP users. They make their business model the subscription to their 'repository' of cool apps and accessories. More than YOU, almost like a comprehensive SW store or stuff they have tailored directly for their Distro. If you are comfortable with the SUSE model then don't bother; however if you value being able to get more 'hand-holding' and are willing to pay for it then Linspire is for you. PeterB
I have it on one of my boxes, and have put it also on my wife's computer. It looks much like Windows 98, but functions more nearly like XP. It is based on Debian, and can run both Windows (any flavor) inside a shell in Linspire using Win4Lin, although Win4Lin can be used with SuSE and other distro's. It is very stable, and much work has gone into making it easy to use for the 'average' user. Generally you pick programs from a 'warehouse' and one click downloads and installs the program. Of course, it gets a little harder, but not impossible,to get programs loaded that are not (yet) in the 'warehouse'. George Doug McGarrett wrote:
