Dear all, I am a new listmember and a relatively new user of SuSE and of Linux. I am still using the 6.1 version -- will upgrade to 6.3 ASAP. The system as a whole works very well but I still have some problems. An important one is faxing. I installed the SuSE fax program exactly as suggested in the user manual but I cannot send faxes. After selecting recipient and document to send nothing happens. If I click on Get Status I receive the following error message: SuSEFax.getStatus:java.net.ConnectException Connection refused Additional details: -- my fax-modem is external (USRobotics SportsterMessagePlus) and works very well as modem under Linux. -- under Win98 I can send/receive faxes with no problems -- the menu shown in the manual (SuSE 6.1, par. 7.7, picture number 7.10) is not completely displayed when I try to send a fax. The "Sende fax" and "Abbruch" ("send fax" -- "exit") icons are not displayed, even if I try to enlarge or move the window. -- I tried also as root but nothing changes, and both the English and German versions are giving the same problems. I will be very grateful to those who will kindly post a suggestion. Hello Guido, First, I use SuSE 6.2 when you installed SuSEFax and HylaFax, did you select Automatic, so that all relevant programs were also selected? You do realize that you are actually using the program HylaFax? SuSEFax is just a frontend (nice pretty GUI) for HylaFax, which is the real workhorse. Kind of like, KDE is not Linux. Do you have the following files installed from Yast for HylaFax to work? hylafax tiff shlibs uucp libjpeg gs_lib libtiff bash libz and one of these three (sendmail, smail, or postfix) I use sendmail Now do you have the following installed for SuSEFax to work? susefax java bash Now to view your faxes install: gsview xshared gs_x11 You might want to use gv too, install: gv xaw3d Disclaimer, I just got my HylaFax/SuSEFax working. Have not used the gsview or gv yet. I just know that they are used for viewing faxes. In the section, faxing with Linux, go through faxsetup faxaddmodem Right off the bat, you are going to be asked if you want to add some line to some init file in /etc. I forget exactly. Answer no! If you use /dev/modem, I would suggest using /dev/ttyS1 or /dev/ttyS2 or whichever your port your modem is on to avoid the lock files. You can go back and change this later once you know you have your fax working. After running faxsetup and faxaddmodem, go into Yast and select yes in the configuration so that HylaFax is started up upon bootup. I will send some other info to this subject line.
