[opensuse] Gnome and KDE on same system
Hi, Is it safe to install KDE and Gnome on the same system? Will it break things? What is the best practice. Thanks in advance. Swapnil -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Hi,
Is it safe to install KDE and Gnome on the same system? Will it break things? What is the best practice.
Why wouldn't it be? What do you imagine the risks or breakage to be? You can install ALL the Window Managers on a single system if you want. I wouldn't try to log into all of them at the same time though :-) C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

OK I installed KDE running this command: sudo zypper install -t pattern kde4 kde4_basis and now when I log into KDE I don't get plasma workspace. All I get is a white desktop. No Panel nothing. What configured repos? Were there any errors during the zypper? What version of KDE did you try to install? The default 4.7.2 with 12.1? Factory 4.7.4? Unstable 4.8RC? Did you drop to terminal and launch KDE from there? Any hints in the logs? Did you have KDE previously running with the current user (as in, is there already a full KDE config hidden in your /home/$USER somewhere). Generally speaking, installing KDE as you did should work. The fact you've got Gnome installed should have zero impact on KDE. I often have multiple WMs installed.. Gnome, KDE, e17, etc. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I can't say I'm surprised. At the very least I think you are lacking some repositories. (and hence many dependencies) I would have expected something like 20 or more packages to be installed to get a basic, functioning KDE4. How many were installed as a result of that command? "Best Practice" is to have the right repositories! If you use YAST you'll see that there are 'short cut' entries. $ sudo yast2 -gtk sw_single Then view -> patterns You will see, if you have enough repositores configured (which have been discussed in other threads recently) items such as "KDE Base System" and "KDE Desktop Environment". You may also see, depending again on repositories, "KDE 4.7 Base System" and "KDE 4.7 Desktop Environment". Now you may be one of those people who have an aversion to YAST, who thinks that anyone who doens't use ONLT the command line is some kind of wimp. That may be so, but here its beside the point. You can't get KDE to work. The GUI gives a LOT of visibility. Yes you _can_ do everything with the command line, but a lot of it is step-and-repeat when the GUI shows a lot. People have pointed out that when you have more knowledge than the computer about a situation and context then the command line is great, but when you don't the GUI/Menu is great. In this situation you don't know what other packages you need. Use YAST2 to look-see. I look-see and the cursor-over for "KDE Base Systems" says that its just enough to start KDE, no luxuries. I don't see KDE Desktop Environment when I search Yast. When I installed KDE it was something around 300MB of packages. Swapnil -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You won't find it doing a search becuase its not a package! What was the problem in the end? In my login screen there are 2 KDE Workspace session options, when I click on one -- I get the white screen and nothing works there. When I select the other one it works. I don't know why there are two options. If there is anyway we can find I am willing to assist. Also there was no default panel or Folder view enabled by default. I had to create the two. Hmmm... I just logged out and back in, and I see the same double entry in the list of WMs (I only use KDE at the moment - haven't got around to installing other WMs since updating to 12.1). This is on a vanilla install of 12.1 with only KDE, but updated to Factory. I also have a laptop with a similar config, but running 100% default.. I'll check it too when I've got a chance. Basically... I see the same, but since I only log into KDE, i have never had the chance to try the other KDE choice.
Also there was no default panel or Folder view enabled by default. I had to create the two. I don't know if that should happen.
That should have been created on the first startup of KDE... the fact it was missing might be an artifact of launching the broken KDE first. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I just checked and I also have 2 KDE Plasma as a selection as well as the Failsafe KDE (whatever that means). My system is a clean install of 32-bit 12.1 but since upgraded to KDE 4.7.7 and kernel 3.2.

How does it work on the other side? With 11.4 KDE, I once installed GNOME 3 and haven't got any networkmanager anymore. So, can I install GNOME 3 on a 12.1 KDE system?
