Semi-OT - IP Cam surveillance software, Linux preferred.
Since this appears to be a group with persons of many interests, I am searching for a program, along the lines of Blue Iris (windows) or ISpy (multi platform) to monitor perhaps 5 IP Video Cameras. The typical set of features would be necessary, such as, motion detection, zoning, alerts, and so on. I realize there are other forums specific to the topic, but, they sometimes have unspoken bias. I would naturally prefer something that ran natively on Linux and just attempted to compile ISpy on Leap 15.4 (on a VM) but it seemed to take forever to progress, so cut it short to solicit comments here. Delete if deemed inappropriate.
I use OSS ZoneMinder. On 5/1/23 13:07, joe a wrote:

I vote for that too. I don't currently have any CCTV cams, but when I was looking at it maybe eight-ten years ago, ZoneMinder looked good. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (12.1°C) Member, openSUSE Heroes (2016 - present) We're hiring - https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Heroes

Installed a test setup on LEAP 15.4 and ZoneMinder from Suse repository: "https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:ecsos:server/15.5/home:ecsos..." Some difficulties ensued and also opened a thread on the ZoneMinder forums. The pressing issue is the web "admin" page comes up blank. File/group on the zm virtual server are root:root, which seemed wrong and were changed to wwwrun:wwwrun. That did not solve the issue, using wget determined there was (is) an internal server error 500. Further foundering led me to enable error reporting for php which, when accessing the zm page, now produced - " Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Class 'IntlDateFormatter' not found in /usr/share/zoneminder/www/includes/config.php:144 Stack trace: #0 /usr/share/zoneminder/www/index.php(45): require_once() #1 {main} thrown in /usr/share/zoneminder/www/includes/config.php on line 144" Still drawing breath, I found mention of uncommenting a line in php.ini for international date so uncommented it. Restarted apache and . . no change. Ah, I love the smell of frustration in the morning.

Per a comment in the zm forum, I found and installed php7-intl, which has resolved that immediate issue. Now the fun part (?) can begin.

The joys of PHP breakage continues..... If every excellent LAMP project had unlimited developers with unlimited time to keep pace with the increasingly backwards incompatible changes to PHP -- there would be no problems... cough... Arch now has to maintain 8.1 and legacy 8.0, notwithstanding the number of great apps that haven't been ported from 7.x.... Glad you got it going. Certainly appropriate. What kind of cameras do you use? Power over Ethernet? WiFi? I'm looking to install a few too. I'm thinking that POE over an isolated IOT subnet is the way to go. Regards, Lew

Have an older HIKVison and a current ANNKE, both "entry level", but sufficient for my needs, Both are POE. I would not choose WiFi for IP cameras. They need power anyway "Solar/Batter" solutions aside, so why risk the attendant issues? I'll take a close look at OSS ZoneMinder. Currently looking for some POE switches as well. I had used an "Injector" in the past, but found it was quite sensitive to power spikes and would need to be reset after the slightest glitch. Probably find if on a UPS, but, a good POE switch, on a UPS, seems a cleaner, simpler solution. The cameras definitely need to be on their own subnet (IMHO), even if a "SOHO" install, and isolated, firewall'ed if not air gap'ed, from the Wilds, as they may have a desire to "phone home" regardless of any "opt out" directives.

Anyone know where current packaged downloads are for Zoneminder? This one does not work any longer: https://www.liquid-co.de/pub/suse/repositories/15.2/ I tried https://www.liquid-co.de/pub/suse/repositories/15.4/ as well.

https://www.liquid-co.de produces an apparent Corporate page, so I suspect that they objected to non Corp hosting? I've posted on zoneminder forum as well.

While I'm waiting for a POE switch to come in, a few questions. My initial go at this will involve a VM, which I anticipate will prove unsatisfactory as to performance once 4-5 IP cameras are installed. Anyone using ZoneMinder here finding VM to be adequate? I know this cannot be an absolute thing. Next thought is a Raspberry Pi 4b, 4 GB or 8 GB. On which I have never attempted to install LEAP. Thoughts on that as well?

I did install Leap 15.4 and 15.5 on a RPi4B, both using a microSD as well as a USB 3.0 drive. I believe a 4GB one will suffice. -- fr.gr. member openSUSE Freek de Kruijf

Another alternative is Motion or MotionPlus - https://motion-project.github.io/index.html - there's an email support list. I have an installation of that which works OK. But more recently I've bought some Reolink POE cameras and use their NVR with them. I back the videos up to a linux box automatically (the joys of FTP :)
