Howzit Chadley? Its is basically a mail server that you can access your mail from any compatible mail client. An example of why you'd want to use it is, you access your email via a desktop at home but can also access it at work or while you're on holiday or business overseas. IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol) provides for services to store emails in a more flexible fashion compared to POP3. With IMAP messages are not downloaded to your local computer. You can read, write and delete emails with an IMAP-enabled client, but all operations take place on the remote machine. The main advantage over other techniques is that you can do email with any IMAP client from any machine that has access to the Internet. This especially useful for people who work at different locations (probably with their laptops) and get their user profile (with IMAP access configured) from a server. With POP3 for example, unless not configured otherwise, all mail is downloaded to the local computer and thereby removed from the remote POP server. Another computer, your laptop for instance, will not have access to all the mail you just downloaded. Hope this gives you an idea of IMAP. \Steve

Imap leaves the mails on the server, where pop3 pulls the mails to the client. Imap is the first choice if you want to access your mails from different clients, like browserbased webmail, the mailclient in your office and later at home you use yet a third client. Imap mailboxes can also be shared to allow access and workflows for departments for a single mailbox (just think about order@, abuse@, customercare@ etc.). Last but not least you can backup the entire email on the server, not the clients and you have a single point of administration. Sandy -- List replies only please! It's a mail server which, unlike POP, makes it easy to access your mail from multiple computers or mail programs, as your messages normally stay on the server. I have an IMAP server on my home netowork and can access my mail from any computer/operating system and mail client I've got.
