Help...I am trying to set up qmail on my linux server and nothing seems to go right. Could someone tell me the best way for a common install of qmail. Being secure and stable. the directions are confusing. Do I remove sendmail first or not. Do I use Maildir or Mbox? What are the daemon tools for or does suse already have it, does Apache need to run in order for it to work. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Plus, I already have a server up and runniing with qmail. Is there a way for me to copy all the settings from that server and place it on a new box Thanks. the Gspot

I'll do the best I can from memory. q-mail is not an "easy" piece of software to set up. Maildir or Mbox depends on what you intend to use qmail for. Maildir is required if you need qmail with POP3. In my opinion, Maildir is the way to go, a little more reliable than mbox. If you use Maildir, you will need to run /your/path/to/qmail/bin/maildirmake for each user you want an account for in their home directory. Run the program as that user, not as root. Since qmail is meant to replace sendmail, I removed sendmail from my system before installing qmail. (also run "/etc/init.d/sendmail stop" to stop any existing sendmail processes) sendmail can always be re-installed from the SuSE installation disks if something goes wrong. daemontools was part of my SuSE installation and I doubt it is on the installation disk. You will need to download this from the web and install from source. (I have a documentation link at the end of this message that will help) daemontools is similar to init.d, it starts daemon process such as qmail and handles all the logging. It's confusing, but if you follow the directions, it should work ok. You should not need to run Apache to run qmail. What exactly are you trying to use q-mail for? If you want web-based e-mail access, you will need Apache, plus something like Squirrelmail (www.squirrelmail.org, which also requires IMAP). If you want access to your mail from a POP3 client, such as Outlook (I think) you will to also install qmail-pop3. If you want access to your mail from a IMAP client, you will need something like Courier-IMAP, qmail does not have an IMAP server. I hope I am getting this right... Regardless, I think your best bet is to sit down with the Life with Qmail document (http://www.lifewithqmail.org) for a long time. It took me about 3 days to set up my system. (qmail, qmail-pop3, Courier-IMAP, Squirrelmail). Once it's up though, you're good to go. As always, feel free to send more questions. Josh

Don't hesitate. qmail would seem the first time a bit messing; but I assure you that if you would want to install sendmail from the sources too, you would give up from the first time. And congratulations for choosing the mest MTA in the world :-P Could someone tell me the best way for a common install of qmail. If you don't want to do things too much complicated, try downloading the whole package "qinstall" at http://freshmeat.net/projects/qinstall/ or http://obua.org/ with all necessary software for installing qmail in a very easy way: smtp, pop, vpopmail (virtual pop3 server for qmail) and sqwebmail, (webmail for vpopmail) from a graphical frontend very intuitive to "play" with. But Josh mail is also very explicative and can also help you a lot: Life with qmail was my first and only doc to read to get installed qmail in a easy and reliable way. Go step by step and in less time you can expecte you will have installed qmail in your suse linux box. Being secure and stable. the directions are confusing. Do I remove sendmail first or not. Well, if your sendmail is now working in a productive manner (serving mails to your clients or friends), it's obvious you cannot. But Life with qmail explains how and when to do it. Do I use Maildir or Mbox? It's your choice! qmail can work with mailbox, mbox and maildir; but maildir is the most reliable and secure mailbox type. What are the daemon tools for or does suse already have it, Daemontools (as Josh has explained very precisely for you) is a set of tools to manage processes: very important to install in order to get a right installation and performance of qmail. You can have it from: http://cr.yp.to/daemontools.html (0.76 version). If you have problems to install this one, please, don't hesitate to email me. does Apache need to run in order for it to work. No, no, no. You will never need Apache to run qmail, vpopmail and sqwebmail, in a "home use". Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. It's a pleasure to be helpful to SuSE users and everybody! Bye! Plus, I already have a server up and runniing with qmail. Is there a way for me to copy all the settings from that server and place it on a new box No, it's the best way not to interchange data between two qmail servers, as Maildir mailbox, for instance, uses inodes of your hard disk to store messages depending very much on them. Read Life With qmail completely and then follow the instructions in it *exactly*. If you ever post to the qmail mailing list people will expect you to have the system setup that way and probably won't answer your question otherwise. -- -ckm
