Just solved the problem . . . I compiled kernel with no sound support, installed OSS (from pay) using yast, put "/usr/local/bin/soundon" in boot.local, and the crackling sounds disappeared. Thats the OSS drivers. Use the kernel ones if possible instead. OSS crackles like a cat on a barbeque if you don't mind me saying it that way...
