The errors reported by the Xserver basically point to the following: your video card does not have the horse power to support 1800X1440 resolution nor can the clock chip go beyond 50MHz dot clock. With 1MB video RAM it can support max. 256 colors @ 1024x768 or 65K colors @ 800x600. The Xserver is defaulting to 1024x768 @ 256 colors. If you don't want to see the error messages then remove the 1800X1440 from the Modes line "Modes 1800x1440 1024x768 .... " in your screen section (last section) and under the "Devices" section remove the line that says "Clocks ...."
If I setup .xinitrc to startkde then x works great. i would like to be able to try other window managers. has anyone else seen this problem.
YaST automatically creates menu options to start other Window Managers when multiple Window Managers are installed. However, I am not sure if this is true when going from KDE -> Other WM. I know I can start KDE from FVWM2. -- Arun Khan - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Hello SuSE'ers, I am looking for documentation to understand the entries in the /etc/conf.modules file. I have browsed thru the SuSE handbook. Although, it has details about specific modules I could not figure out how to add new and/or modify entries in it. Any pointers would be highly appreciated. I too found it hard to work out what to put in there as I never bothered with any modules before. What are you trying to use as a module. you . I am looking for **general** information on how to read/edit/add new entries in the file and how to associate the various aliases defined there to device files.... This apriori knowledge would help a lot in configuring modules before going to any forum for help. Unfortunately, the Modules mini-HowTo does not go into this at all and neither does the SuSE hand book or it's SDB. Seems like there is no documentation. -- Arun Khan - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Some decent documentation can be found in the depmod and insmod manpages. The depmod (otherwise known as modprobe) manpage seems to be the best for explaining the layout and hows/whys of /etc/conf.modules. -- Steve Philp sphilp@ameritech.net "The Internet is like crack for smart people" --Arsenio Hall - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

The aliases just map device numbers to the associated drivers (see /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt). Other than that there are only driver specific options. Most of them are documented in the book (insmod parameters). There is no general documentation for them. If you are interested in one specific driver you will need to browse the source. Look for a function called "init_module" and look what parameters are recognized. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I can get into X from startx if my .xinitrc file contains the following line exec /opt/kde/bin/startkde if I comment this out and try to startx or startx <some window manager> I get the error and X quits. if I try to startx by running xdm or kdm in init run level 3. I get the login screen and after I login. the screen turns grey and xconsole starts and that is as far as it goes. no window manager starts. this all started after I upgraded to 5.3 to review: I can only get into X if I run KDE. anything else I get that error message and X quits. My X config file is unchanged from when I ran 5.2. I only run KDE from xstart and no windows manager will work in XDM or KDM this was not the case prior to upgrading. I have included my XF86Config file. if there anything alse I could send you to help aid you in solving this problem let me know. Thanks for your help
