Hello, all-- Have an HP 2200D Laserjet. It's been putting a dark gray smudge on the lower 2/3 of the page, in the middle quarter or so of the page. I have lost the manual, and initial looks in Google have not been helpful. Is there some component that needs cleaning, and if so, what is it? (Please describe in detail.) Or if there's some sort of cleaning routine that can be performed from the 'puter, what is it, and how do you do it? I could run it from Linux 10.0 or Win XP, whichever. I thank you for your patience and assistance! --doug -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.10.7/410 - Release Date: 8/5/2006

-- Doug, The manual can be obtained in PDF form from the HP site. That should give you some idea what to look for in the printer. Not sure how the new laserjets are done, but it could be a couple of things from memory. If yours is different and all things are contained in the cartridge,

Is your machine one that uses a separate toner cartridge / drum setup or is it replaced all at the same time. On the separate ones, its a sign that the drum has had it. On the toner+Drum kind, its an indication the cartridge has been re-filled one to many times. Your heat and pressure rollers can also cause this, but because they are smaller, they would leave marks all up and down the paper. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Don't have this printer (I use a Lexmark) but this sounds like the felt on the bar (or whatever it is called :-) ) which keeps the paper pressed against the drum is now contaminated from long use and needs replacing. A new one should come with a new cartridge - or you can try and clean the current one, but I don't like your chances. Cheers. -- This computer is environment-friendly and is running on OpenSuSE 10.1
