Trying to install Suse 9.3 on Dell PowerEdge 1850. Gets to main options screen and then tells me it can't detect hard drives. I've installed RH9 and RH7.2 sucessfully on this machine without a hitch.. Any ideas? I had problems with a Dell machine and it was the SATA controller. Redhat found it, but SuSE never did. M. Todd Smith wrote:

Hi I've got suse 9.2 running on six of those machines. Everything was detected automatically. They have this SCSI controller: Model: "Dell 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI" Vendor: pci 0x1000 "LSI Logic / Symbios Logic" Device: pci 0x0030 "53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI" lsmod lists these kernel modules: Module Size Used by af_packet 26636 0 edd 12240 0 freq_table 6080 0 thermal 21132 0 processor 31264 1 thermal fan 6920 0 button 10656 0 battery 13576 0 ac 8072 0 ipv6 280128 27 evdev 11648 0 joydev 12160 0 sg 43192 0 st 42020 0 sr_mod 19236 0 uhci_hcd 34080 0 ehci_hcd 32772 0 hw_random 7072 0 subfs 10752 1 dm_mod 60992 0 e1000 88964 0 usbcore 126592 4 uhci_hcd,ehci_hcd reiserfs 254704 2 mptscsih 38192 0 mptbase 47968 1 mptscsih sd_mod 19200 4 scsi_mod 133760 5 sg,st,sr_mod,mptscsih,sd_mod mptscsih is the module used for the scsi card hope this helps, Maarten

Did this occur with the Safe Install/Failsafe installation option too? Have you tried the manual installation option and manually loading the drive (if it's a choice)? From Dell's specs, it appears to be a dual-processor, or dual-processor capable, system. Have you tried passing some apic boot parameters? Such as: enableapic lapic apic SMP systems handle interrupts differently and you might need to account for this during the installation. You can check on [CTRL] [ALT] [F3] and [F4] for yast and kernel messages. This might reveal some useful information. From console [F2] you can try manually loading the driver ("modprobe mptscsih"). Check back on console [F4] for any further error messages about the driver-load attempt, if it fails. The following commands from console [F2] will show useful hardware information: lspci -vvv hwinfo --scsi hwinfo --storage_ctrl And have a look through /var/log/boot.msg for anything related to SCSI and/or resource problems. -- /Paul "It's not about the ending, it's about the journey." - Lex Luthor
