[SLE] Can't play .wav file
Hi all, I've been visiting some Monty Python sites ;-) and I've downloaded a couple of wav files with sound clips. However, when I try to play them, I'm told: chris@respc-csr2:~ > wavplay mnkchant.wav Only supports PCM wave format: Reading WAV header from mnkchant.wav I'm using OSS with a Yamaha DS-XG PCI sound card (supported by separate OSS module) and kernel 2.2.5. Other sounds play fine, and from the message that I get when I try to play it, I'm assuming that there is more than one type of wav file? What program can I use to play this?? I think I've tried all of the possibilities on my system. The start of the wav file has this (in case it's of any help): RIFFÞÝWAVEfmt #U`p+Ä ` I got this from a straight 'cat mnkchat.wav' So it looks like it's a riff file? What do I use to play it? I guess this file is in MS adpcm format. There are many different encoding
schemes, all having the .wav ending. ADPCM is used because it uses quite a
bit less disk space. I know of no Linux program that is able to read that
format. The only solution I see is to use a Windows sound editor and
transform the file into normal PCM format.

Thanks for the reply Philipp. Oh well, I'm not going to reboot out of Linux to fiddle with these sound clips, I'm not *that* desperate ;-) Thanks anyway, I think I'll just give up then, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
