Re: Holdout States Want Microsoft Office Ported To Linux
This statement sums it up. "'I think everybody in the world is probably looking for some competitive desktop operating system, but I don't think that anybody wants to switch,' said Robert Hacker, systems manager at Binney & Smith Inc. in Easton, Pa., the maker of Crayola crayons. Hacker said that while the idea of moving to Linux is intriguing, he would have to see a "critical mass" of adoption before he would consider it." I believe I've seen this before. Where reluctance rules right up to the point where a couple/few opt for the new path and then the snowball effect happens. In otherwords, once you get a few corporations that have taken the "risk" of switching their desktop OS with a ported app that affords them all the benefits of both worlds, and they and other find it managable, cost saving, and takes no hits on their productivity, then the others fall in line (Can you say lotus notes on win3.1 vs M$ office suite). They had to face the same thing about a decade ago and they made the switch - hence the makings of the monopoly were born! Port it and they will come. A remedy plan supported by nine holdout states would force Microsoft to port Windows to Linux and other rival operating systems. The goal is to weaken the monopoly status of the Windows operating system, but end users say Microsoft's grip is too tight.

I think there is too much obsession with porting MS apps. Let's show the world we don't need MS by developing high-quality open-source native Linux apps. This is already happening, of course. I barely use Windows/MS any more. That trend will only grow stronger as more and more developers and users join the swelling tide. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.2 Professional KDE 2.1.2 KMail 1.2 Bryan S. Personaly I am not a great specialist in computer science. Just an end-user but I am using Linux about at 100% (99.8% because Canoscan 650U does not like Linux, shame to Canon. As soon as a competitor makes a portable scanner Linux-friendly I throw my Canoscan in the trash-can. I do genealogical work and I need a light and carryable scanner). I did many thinks though with Linux: Mysql/Perl/Tk, Postfix mail servor working but still at test-stage, I am trying now Cyrus-Imap but still have problems, sound capture with ecasound or gramofile and I would like to do video capture => divx compression but failed to install VCR but I don't despair, etc At the end of january I'll do a seminar about Linux where I work. It won't be easy because I am the only one who knows some little thing on the matter and I'll face a front of Windows or Apple users (already facing them). I hesitate how I'll present it (excuse my bad english). Powerpoint is not available yet on Linux. I just have my two laptops (one PC and one iBook both with SuSE 7.x). Is there something equivalent to Powerpoint? Does anybody has suggestions and url's with interesting matters to show in a seminar? Give the Presentation tool in StarOffice6 a try. I have used it a couple of times, and it works fine for creating presentations - it can work with PPT native files too if you need to. C.
Hi I have used StarOffice 5.2 successfully for a long time now. With few exceptions it reads PPT-files correctly, and the faults are not difficult to correct. (text-box might be a little bigger because bigger font etc...) So install StarOffice, and start playing with it. It is different, but works nicely, and when You get used to it, it actually is a nice piece of SW. Jaska. Viestissä Torstai 20. Joulukuuta 2001 23:05, Clayton Cornell kirjoitti:

For my normal usage, it is as good as PPT ever thought of being, and works faster on the
same hardware.

I have the 656U, which *would* be a great scanner *if* it worked in Linux. I sent an email to their tech support telling them I switched to Epson and would not be buying more Canon products until they began to offer Linux drivers, or at least release the specs for the community to write drivers. I did not receive a reply.

I too, have gotten nothing out of Canon, even after 2 months of delay... I was thinking of buying a canoscan but didn't after they replied negativly to emails. On Thursday, December 20, 2001, at 04:23 PM, Bryan Tyson wrote:

Thank you for your E-mail inquiry.
The scanner was designed to operate within Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 2000 operating systems. At this time Canon has not developed Linux drivers for our products. At such time that the drivers are available they will be posted on our websites.

Canon marketing is price, price and price.....along with a hefty dose of Microsoft compatible. They do not appear to be interested in Linux users. I hope to get an Epson for my next printer. Brian Marr. On Friday 21 December 2001 11:05, you wrote:

I'm running an Hewlett-Packard printer and they support Linux well, they just released an update on their Linux drivers.

This is a different source than the one I was refering to; what I mentioned was Hewlett-Packard's own drivers for their printers. Of course, there are many many 3rd party drivers available for their hardware, I think each of their popular printers have at least three drivers available from YAST, one from HP, and the generic and ghostscript ones.
I totally agree with you Bryan. My deeper point (and I think the sub-plot of the Attorney Gens) is that once the code is opened up and ported, and the API's, etc made available then cross-platform functionality for Linux will skyrocket. How long do you think it would be before the next version of Open Office/Koffice/StarOffice would be out with a fuller and more robust set of capabilities. Being able to send and save *.doc, etc (M$) formated documents and Powerpoint style presentations to the M$ holds outs would be the cinch pin in the viability factor for the Penguin. Once this occurs then why the hell would any self respecting capitalist pay outrageous prices and inhibitive license fees for an M$ product when Open Office or Koffice will do all the formats that anyone could hope for. I buy an OS from SuSE, or for that matter KDE disc with Koffice on it. Burn a few dozen copies of it, spread them around the IT staff to implement department by department. The interface is now user-friendly and in a style that is suitable for M$ drones to become accustomed to with a minimal of effort and training. The CEO, Pres, VP's, CTO's/CIO's weigh the cost/benefit of M$ prices/licensing fees vs Linux/re-train cost and bite. This is what "scares the sh*t our of M$". This is what their monopoly and propriety are all about. They want to set the standard and then be the only ones allowed to implement it. This is antithetical to the Linux paradigm and once this can of worms is open, from an M$ point of view, then life may well become very unpleasant - Hell M$ would actually have to "compete" and "try" to put out something truly innovative and cost-affordable - all the while continuing to have their stock prices and dividends as high as their investors have become used to enjoying. A pretty big ticket to fill. Just MHO, Curtis On Thursday 20 December 2001 12:26, Bryan Tyson wrote:
