Re: [SLE] Anti-Aliasing: How do I do it?

I can't wait to try it. Hopefully by the time the next SuSE comes out it will be the default. Three brief questions for you:
1.) Were you able to find a RPM of qt-experimental, or did you have to compile the CVS version (I always hate to over write packages with source code)?
SuSE has an RPM included with the latest X release on their ftp site.
2.) Do you have a noticeable speed decrease?
I was able to notice it on my Matrox G200 8MB AGP running at 1280x1024. I tend to have a lot of windows on my screen at one time. What slowed down most was window movement. While it looked nice and all, there were a couple of annoyances that made me drop it: 1) I was only able to use MS fonts. That meant I had to download them using fetchmsttfonts. I don't have Windows and couldn't copy them. The biggest thing, of course is that I was unable to use any of the plethora of X fonts that I have. A problem for me... 2) The display of the "Courier New" font left a lot to be desired. 'O' and 'C' look the same. This made using KWrite unbearable, and I use KWrite for programming... You can see a screenshot at: http://www.funktronics.ca/images/Why_Anti-Aliasing_Sucks.png You'll notice that I have KWord open showing a drop box with most of the few fonts I had to choose from. I also have written the words 'TOP' and 'TCP' to show the problem with displaying the 'O' character. There are also a couple of GTK apps without AA, showing that AA doesn't make *that* much difference. The Adobe Helvetica is very nice without having to AA it. If I could AA the X fonts, I might try it again, but I currently cannot. I didn't find the window movement to have been slowed down on my 1600 x
1200 LCD screen, but that might be because of the differences in video
cards. I did see (after you mentioned it) the problem with the TOP and TCP
with the Courier New font but only when the size was set to 12. In other
sizes (I tried 10, 11, 13, 20, etc.) The C looked like a C and the O looked
like an O. It seems to be a bug in the AA code.
I did find the AA annoying in kterminal so I applied a patch to turn it off
for that specific program.
