[SuSE Linux] root on X...
Hello! How can I run programs (like tkRPM) as root? When I log in as a simple user, and "su" in xterm, it is not working (I give the "cannot connect to :0:0", or similar, I don't remember exactly). It is important for me, because I don't like log in as root. Peter, I think you can do it by su -l root which will get you a root login shell with root's environment. info su will get you more on this. -- John Nickerson, Kailua, Hawaii <<A HREF="http://www.pixi.com/~johnnick/homepage.html</A">http://www.pixi.com/~johnnick/homepage.html</A>> A little inaccracy sometimes saves a ton of explanation. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

This is a security feature. Just run "xhost +localhost" before switching to the root login... You can fix that by setting the environment variable to point to your xauthority file (usually ~/.Xauthority) or if root doesn't have the authority to read that file (i.e. it is a remote file) then run "xauth list $DISPLAY" as yourself and "xauth add <output from previous xauth>" as root. You can also use xhost BUT that can leave you wide open if you are connected to a network and is bad practice for responsible systems administrators, perhaps even comparable to having . in root's PATH. /Michael -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
