It looks like you don't have the package "textutil" installed. Head is part of that package.
Sorry I omitted to mention that head and so forth are all there and working fine. For all purposes except apsfilter (under user lp.) I am looking for clues as to what might give the impression that something is missing when it isn't. Like you suggest, it is a UNIX* 101 mistake, just not that one. Directory permissions is the only other thing that I suspected, but the whole / /usr /usr/bin tree is world readable and executable. Someone off-list suggested deleting and reinstalling my whole print system, including ghostscript and my /var/spool/lpd tree, (it worked for him after harden_suse broke printing for him) but I am reluctant to do this until I find out what really went wrong. harden_suse is guilty only by association - I have no evidence to even put it on trial. btw - my installed driver was uniprint, but the system doesn't even get far enough to invoke ghostscript anymore. dproc *UNIX is a registered trademark - last I heard The Open Group owned it but it keeps changing hands so don't sue me if I'm wrong
