Is upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1 a abd thing?

I have had 8.1 upgrade version sitting here for a month, and I know a fresh install is usually best, but to reinstall all my data and packages again will be very time consuming, and I have a business to run, so can an upgrade be done smoothly? What bug-a -boos should I watch out for? TIA Harry G

Harry, I had a very good upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 here. I had to do some tweaking later of some files that got replaced, but it has been minor stuff. I did do complete backups of important data first though, just in case and would advise you to do the same. If everything is good and solid in your 8.0 setup, then 8.1 should be as well. Take baby steps and be sure of your selections in the installer, ask if not sure, but I think you will or should be ok for an upgrade. I know several here have had problems or machines crashing, but I think that might be due to a kernel error that Mantel is searching out now. Thing is that it seems to only happen with certain hardware, not all, as I have had no such problems with any of his kernels. I could not find a way to do an upgrade when Installing from FTP. Is this possible? Hi Patrick Thats all well and good, and I always do buy the official version so that I can have the DVD handy for recoveries, but as I run a SuSE ftp mirror for Turkey anyway it is certainly no hastle to install machines over 100MB ether :-) Infact it is much preferable to do network installs as they are much faster than cd/dvd, and adding packages to servers doesn't require going into the server room to put a cd in :-) -- Peter Nixon http://www.peternixon.net/ PGP Key: http://www.peternixon.net/public.asc

I've been trying to do an "ftp-upgrade" but, like you, couldn't find a way to do that. If you have a SuSE-mirror why not try to do an "nfs-upgrade"? I don't know if this works because i haven't tried that myself, but maybe someone else on this list knows?? regards, Marcel

Hell, I can copy the sources to my second hard disk if need be, but unless there is an option in the installer to do an upgrade it won't change anything.. Patrick, (and any others) I have a copy of the 8.1 install (NOT upgrade) Cds. I would like to upgrade my 8.0 box, the problem is that my KDE is running at 3.04-5, and the version that gets installed is 3.0.3. Another problem is that when I tried to upgrade a box at work I lost the ability to update using YOU. (It keeps failing when I try to start the update from ftp or even from a local drive). Peter, To do an ftp upgrade you have to enter 'suse_upgrade' (without the quotes, of course) in the kernel options section that you see on the kernel selection screen after booting with the iso download. The upgrade went reasonably smooth but the upgrade utility would not allow me to keep my kderc2 version. It insisted on downgrading by installing kde 3.03. Otherwise, I was given the option of keeping various versions of software on the computer. If you do an automatic install, you may be disappointed with the results. At one point during the upgrade process I got dumped and lost connectivity. I rebooted the iso cd and, after connecting, the installer picked up the pieces and finished the upgrade successfully. Seems very stable at this time although YMMV, of course. Now I'm going to try to re-setup my zaurus connectivity. It was pretty easy with 8.0..... Good Luck, Ken

That's what we needed to know. Thanks Ken. Of course there's the option of doing an apt-get dist-upgrade, but this is, although working real well, not supported by SuSE and please (!) read the docs before you begin. Marcel

OK. Does anyone know how well an upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 will go when I have all the Suplimentary KDE packages installed (ie. newer than the ones in the upgrade) I did this previously from 7.3+supps -> and it completely hosed X and KDE and took me about 4 hours to get it fixed again (Along time for me as I can usualy fix most linux problems in 5 min or so) I am seriously considering using apt to do the dist-upgrade unless someone can tell me that the SuSE installer will handle this ok. Can one of the SuSE guys weigh in on this? has anyone sucessfully done this upgrade? I hate upgrades normally and would never do it to a server, but I just don't have time right now for a reinstall on my PC. -- Peter Nixon http://www.peternixon.net/ PGP Key: http://www.peternixon.net/public.asc

Yes did it finally today no big fuss except for a couple of known problems which are in the SDB ie like append line problem with /etc/lilo.conf along with AutoYast2 related problem with YOU. Other than these not a major showstopper. Taking into consideration that I have the system installed in English and as the user I am using tr_TR.UTF-8 environment I would say a nice and smooth upgrade both system wise and user wise. Hi DJ, Well, for one thing, it stands to reason that if you are moving from gcc2.95 to gcc3.2 compiled programs that many things will be replaced in order for everything to work correctly. That was my first clue, the second was using YaST2 as it updated things, as it pretty much tells you what will be replaced as it goes. The third thing was that some things didn't work as they did before, usually alerting one to the fact that a config file or link had been altered. All in all a little common sense and a fair amount of SuSE letting you know as you go along. Patrick -- --- KMail v1.4.3 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206
