[opensuse] FireFox 5.0 locks up system...
Hi all, I have just installed SuSE 11.4 and over all its very nice. But the new FireFox seems to be locking the system up. About 3-4 times a day it hard locks the system, nothing works. So I have to unplug the power to restart the computer. I tried to downgrade back to FF4, but I can't get the system to accept it. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks! I really doubt the problem is Firefox5. That is a well tested browser, and pretty much everyone using an updated openSUSE 11.4 has FF5 now... so if there was some issue in FF5 that caused general lockups... there woudl be a lot of kerfuffle on the mailing list. :-) Have you poked in your messages log file after a restart? Is there something specific you are doing when the lockup happens? Flash 10? Flash 11? I've read some postings elsewhere (on the Adobe Labs forums) that under certain circumstances Flash 11 Beta has caused some lock ups in Linux. I've had such lockups with my old computer (openSUSE 11.0/11.1 + KDE3 + FF 3 something). My impression was that it is something related to interaction with X (lockup occurred usually when I clicked on something). Sometimes it was "local", only FF got stuck, so I could kill it. But sometimes it was system lockup. It looked like interrupts were blocked (Mouse, Keyboard are dead, impossible to "ping" the system from other computer and I had to use 20-second press on Power On/Off button to restart the system. Tried to see if this is one of my FF extensions, but could not localize it. But I had some old HW (TV card) on that computer and probably there were HW problems. I have not seen such total lockups with 11.3 and 11.4. One thing - try running FF is safe mode (without extensions) and see whether the lockups still occur. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi all, I seem to have fix it. I deleted the SuSE branded Firefox and installed the plain FF. Now its working and I've not had a lock up at all.
