[SLE] extremely weird install problem : y -> z
Hi, I had this generic motherboard with the via chipset and award bios. It is a coppermine PIII. If I install from the 6.4 cdrom, booting from the cdrom, with NUMLOCKS ON enabled in bios, the screen output confuses "z" and "y" In other words, if I type "yast" the system runs yast, but echos "zast" to the terminal window. If I install from cdrom, boot from floppy, and turn NUMLOCKS OFF in bios, there is no problem. Has anyone have an explanation? The motherboard vendor said the vis chipset was designed for windows, and it may be causing this. Go into Yast and set your keyboard to 101-US-qwerty (or something like that, depending on what you want. My students just did a "follow me" install on 15 systems in the lab, (all exactly the same systems). I just spent my lunch-hour setting up keyboards! 10 out of 15 were set to the default (german) which replaces z with y amongst a few other things. -- This Email is 100% Virus Free! How do I know? Actually, the output is not wrong, but the input is. As others have explained, you probably had a German keyboard (or at least the computer thought you had). However to help in this situation, SuSE wisely decided to make a symbolic link for YaST, so that you could type 'zast' instead. If you look closely, you might even notice that 'yast' is also merely a link to 'YaST'. Regards Ole -- Windows: Where do you want to go today? MacOS: Where do you want to be tomorrow? That is unbeleivable. I would have thought that suse would have taken the time to put another query about the keyboard in the setup routine. Talk about blind! If you use YaST2 it is the second screen that comes up (first is language) If you exit from YaST2 and go with YaST1, read what the screens say, and go to the settings for keyboard and language!! Well as I see it now, the default keyboard when you install from floppy (yast1) is US 101 key, when you install from the cdrom (yast1), it is german, even if you select English as the language. That caused the confusion. I know now to check the keyboard also. I have been so used to installing from a floppy boot with earlier versions, that I assumed the cdrom boot would give me a default US keyboard. At least I learned something about german keyboards which I wll never forget. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Hi Fellows ! Have any one install, setup and use Linuxconf under SuSE 6.4 ? I have look at a Red Hat 6.2 instalation to the tool "linuxconf" and seems that I can configure MORE (VERY MORE) of things(DNS/POP3DHCP, etc). Does SuSE plans or allows (because the differences on the configurations) to install and use properly "linuxconf"????
