[SuSE Linux] soundcard?
Hi, I should probably start out by mentioning that I'm a complete novice to linux and computers in general. A few days after buying the linux cd's I finally succeeded in more or less installing the system and x is running. But how can I get some sound out of it? I looked in yast "integrate hardware innto system", but nothing there about a soundcard or anything. (Assuming soundcard is hardware). I think I have a 'soundblaster pro' or something like that. Thanks in advance! - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

hello david, which version of SuSE do you have? and do you know which kernel you have installed? ironically, i found it easier getting sound to work with kernels 2.0.x than with 2.2.x. Anyway, if you have the 5 CD release you should find the free version of OSS under the sound packages via YaST. Make sure it is installed and then read the help that comes with it. It will hopefully automatically detect your sound card and install the appropriate drivers. Or if you've got the $20(?) just buy the commmercial version of OSS and get technical support (and more functionality). Using OSS is very easy so you should have few problems.
