Hi John and anybody else following this yarn - Thanks for sending the comparison file. This problem just keeps getting more "interesting" all the time. Tried using the graphical YaST2 today to look at things ans was told under sound card configuration that there was an available 82801 AC'97 audio and that I already had configured (the install did this) an Intel 82801DB-ICH4 and it was configured as snd-card-0. Clicking on the configure option for the AC'97 variant I get an error message from YaST2 saying "The number of currently running sound cards doesn't match the number of configured cards in your configuration files. Try to restart sound system? Y N " If I try to change the installed ICH4 item I'm told that I need to do so from a shell as root with YaST2 sound .oss which I attempted and got the result of "Hardware detection found a new sound card. To configure it - as the FIFTH sound card, select the appropriate item in the list and press configure." Doing this just bounces me out of the configuration. Returning to the graphical YaST2 I tried the option of restarting the sound system which resulted in the message "No soundcard available." Now booting shows no sound module being loaded at startup nor - obviously - one being unloaded at shutdown. Any thoughts. It seems to me as though 8.2 doesn't understand how to work with on-board sound at all. dave John wrote:

Hi David,
Here's a copy of my /etc/modules.conf , I have a SBLive card, and a Shuttle MOBO, so naturally some things are different, but I noticed 2 or 3 lines on yours that are on mine, but mine are uncommented, and IIRR, there may be a line or two missing from yours that mine has, but I couldn't tell you if that means anything for you or not, sorry. Maybe you can try commenting/uncommenting one line at a time to look lke mine, and do a depmod - -a or something like that? I sure wish I could help more, but I just don't have the know-how yet.

This is probably a dumb question, but have you tried uninstalling what YaST2 has in the soundcard part, and then clicking on the 'add' button, and starting it anew? I've got onboard sound on my system too, and I'm gonna see if YaST2 will make it work (I hope this will create a second 'modules.conf for it! LOL). Okay, just tried the onboard sound (YaST2 finds it and calls it CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device...even though it's onboard and not PCI card). It set it up just fine, but the sound was *extremely* low, I had to turn it up to 100, and with my external volume control for my speaker setup (an old Cambridge Soundworks FPS1000) I had to turn it up to almost halfway to get a decent amoutn of volume to hear the test wav. Maybe, just maybe, this is what's happening with you. The volume coming out is so low you can't hear it. If that's the case, I'd spring for a nice soundcard (the SBLive's work good and are fairly cheap I think, compared to when I got mine when it first came out), and/or a nice speaker setup (I've been oggling one for a month now that I'd do almost anything, disbaled as I am or not, to have...any one of these three, from last choice to first choice: Logitech Z640, Logitech Z560, and last but want the most Logitech Z680). In case you *are* or *do* think about a different soundcard and speaker setup, look in www.pricewatch.com for both, I think you'll find a darn good deal.
