[SLE] Celeron or PIII for SuSE Linux
Hello! I am planning to buy a new PC for use with SuSE Linux. Because of low budget I'm interested if it is wise to invest in more MBs of RAM memory (128 instead of 64) and buy Celeron (566MHz) instead of PIII (550MHz)? I use computer primarily for text processing and database applications. Is it Celeron 566 powerful enough to run DVD movies with good graphic card? You can go either way. Personally, I would go with 128MB and the Celeron 566MHz. By the time that you need to upgrade again, the PIII will be at an affordable price.
Is it Celeron 566 powerful enough to run DVD movies with good graphic card?
Once your CPU gets past 500MHz, this question becomes largely irrelevant since you got more processing power than you really need. A 566MHz CPU, 128MB memory, and a 32MB video card is more than enough to run DVD movies smoothly. I would definitely go with the 128 of memory. With the low budget, the Celeron would be a good choice.

Not into DVD yet, but would believe that the Celeron would do the job.

If youŽre low in budget buy better an AMD K6-2-500, they are cheaper than the Celerons. You also definitely donŽt need 128 MB if youŽre low in budget.

Yes it is, but the AMD K6-2 does it too! HFH JLT

Personally, I'd load up on RAM. I have 256 so I can multi-task a lot, but even 128 provides huge amounts of room for resource guzzling apps (such as Netscape). This also saves you performance loss from Linux using swap rather than RAM. just my $0.02... -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. My opinion would be this. Since you're running Linux, the processing power would not be as important as you would have run on M$, so go for celeron and have as much RAM as you could afford in that tight budget. I'm currently building my computer, and although I don't have very much cash myself (I don't think any 16 year old kid does), I'll put 256MB ram in there so that everything would run very nicely under both worlds. Hopefully you picked up something that uses UDMA66 and 133MHz FSB. As to DVD, I believe it's sufficient as long as the connection between the drive and the computer is not slower than the speed of the drive. (like putting a 52X cdrom on an old IDE controler). But there's no soft DVD decoders for Linux (unless you can find DeCSS). Good luck buying your computer. PS if you don't mind, email me and I can give you some tips on buying your next one. Hi there,
If you value your privacy don't buy a PIII.
But isn't the same with celeron? The core of CPU is the same, so I supposed celerons too were going to send their serial over the net... That's really not neccesary. Just make sure your BIOS knows how to diable the serialnumber and you're ready to use your P-]|[ without the worries. Award has such an option. Rogier Maas Samy Elashmawy wrote:

Get the memory. With my ATI rage fury Celeron 333 plays DVDs fine under windows.
