Installing KDE3 from SuSE/Experimental
Hi, I have downloaded and installed KDE3 experimental packages for SuSe 7.3 from SuSE ftp (built April 7, 2002). They are being RPM-ed into /opt/experimental/kde3. Now I have 2 questions: 1) How to switch "startx" from kde2 to kde3 (I am still being booted into kde2). 2) May I safely remove kde2 packages, and if yes, which ones (qt2 and kdelibs probably have to be left)?

Hi,
I have downloaded and installed KDE3 experimental packages for SuSe 7.3 from SuSE ftp (built April 7, 2002). They are being RPM-ed into /opt/experimental/kde3.
Now I have 2 questions:
1) How to switch "startx" from kde2 to kde3 (I am still being booted into kde2).
put this line in your .bashrc file - export WINDOWMANAGER=kde3
2) May I safely remove kde2 packages, and if yes, which ones (qt2 and kdelibs probably have to be left)?
dunno

::1) How to switch "startx" from kde2 to kde3 (I am still being booted into ::kde2). You can switch kde2 to kde in /etc/rc.config. Make sure that in /usr/X11R6/bin that kde is softlinked (shortcut) to /opt/kde3/bin/startkde. Then you just run SuSEconfig to update everything. You want to make sure that in ~/.bashrc and /etc/profile that all references to kde2 are switched to kde3. ::2) May I safely remove kde2 packages, and if yes, which ones (qt2 and ::kdelibs probably have to be left)? Not if you want to run any 2.x.x programs. If you use things like Kinkatta for AIM or Licq I would suggest leaving KDE2 on your system and just not touching it for now. Not all of the everyday KDE programs have been updated to be installed in /opt/kde3. If you have the space..just leave everything alone for now. :) Remember KDE3 is a .0 release. There may be issues that will cause you to revert to KDE 2.2.X and if you remove it not only can't you run 2.X programs in KDE3 but it won't be there if you have to switch back. This is a transition time for KDE. It's not like going from 2.1.0 to 2.2.2 or anything. :) -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- "I've never been quarantined. You may need to update your ~/.xsession file from /usr/local/kde3. On 10 Apr 2002 at 10:25, Ben Rosenberg wrote:

or synlink /opt/kde3/bin/startkde to kde3 and update wmlist to also list kde3
You want to make sure that in ~/.bashrc and /etc/profile that all references to kde2 are switched to kde3. (or your ~/.cshrc ~/.tcshrc depending on your shell ;) )

I would suggest leaving all of kde2 there, unless your short on diskspace. Having kde2 as a fallback is nice I have kde2 and kde3 sitting side by side (even kde1 is still on there ;) ) and have no problems (except that kde1 will likely no longer run as both kde3 and kde1 use a .kde startup dir ;) )

Actually the move from kde 2.2.2 to kde3.0.0 went more smooth than from kde2.1.X to kde2.1.X+1 (forgot which it was one of the minor upgrades in kde2.1 (or from kde2.1.9999 to kde 2.2) forced me to rm ~/.kde2 (well mv ~/.kde2 ~/.kde2-broken) before I could get kde2 to work again. kde2 -> kde3 worked out of the box. (well except for the fact that the startkde script is slightly broken. Do not forget to replace unset KDEDIRS (or somesuch, first line after the comment block wityh export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt3/ export KDEDIRS=/etc/X11/kde3:/opt/kde3 export KDEMAINDIR=/opt/kde3/ Currently listening to: 06-Beauty Knows No Pain Gerhard, <@jasongeo.com> == The Acoustic Motorbiker == -- __O Standing above the crowd, he had a voice so strong and loud =`\<, we'll miss him (=)/(=) Ranting and pointing his finger, At everything but his heart we'll miss him

They were beta-2 rather than the release. Hopefully they've been updated since then! If not, you'll want to grab the release version from ftp://download.your-country-domain.kde.org, or wait for a polished SuSE edition to be placed on their ftp servers. (Or hopefully in Yast2 online update like KDE 2.2.2) -- Anthony's Law of Force: Don't force it; get a larger hammer.

Timestamps were april 7 sadly no readmes kdebase is kdebase3-3.0-20.rpm the kdebase from the SuSE tree on KDE-ftp is kdebase3-3.0-16.i386.rpm

As far as I know the SuSE tree on the KDE ftp mirrors is built by SuSE employees, and the SuSE subtree are the SuSE rpms Tell you what, Ill just install them (once I've got dual head working again ;) ) . and if it faisl Ill unintsall and reinstall the regular kde3 ..
