[opensuse] 11.3 & New way of Screen, ie no Sax?
Hi all, I installed 11.3 this morning, but after about 10 minutes I had to delete it and go back to 11.2. It's my own fault because I didn't know what to do to set the monitor setting correctly. The new software seems to "guess" at the monitor settings, but in my case it did not get it right. I have a Samsung 2494HS monitor. KDE comes up and it looks good, but within a minute or so the monitor shows an error, something like "not recamended (sp) please use 1920x1080 60hz" Then after about 3-4 minutes the monitor goes black and I have to turn it off and back on to get a picture. Can someone give an idea about how to handle this? Thanks, JIM in Germany -- The US was colonized by the religious, political, economic, and criminal rejects of every country in the world. Did you try to copy your old xorg.conf file?
In a previous thread it was mentioned that an old xorg.conf can not replace 11.3's: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2010-07/msg00010.html I have not checked if it is really like that as I don't have 11.3 system yet. Would it be possible to build an sax2 rpm for 11.3 from 11.2 sources? Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Istvan, I did just that (11.3, nvidia): copied old xorg.conf (even from 11.0). Important thing: if you worked with nvidia closed source driver on the source system, install it before running X with copied xorg.conf on the target system. Also there is a user who built Sax2 for 11.3. I do not remember the URL by heart, will check it when I'm back home. But you can try searching oS repositories. Here is the repository for Sax2 on 11.3: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/saigkill:/sax2/openSUSE_11.3... (I did not try it myself so can't say how well it works). I've been using the same xorg.conf since at least 11.0 right up to 11.3 - the only issue I had was to disable the KMS for 11.3.

Not likely to good end. It depends on a supporting cast that includes the kernel, which forked into two paths (with and without KMS) during 11.3 development, making its job more complex. For it to be revived, it needs a community maintainer/developer. http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2010-05/msg00079.html Speculation: For some it might be possible to get by with an rpm from one of the milestones released prior to being dropped (M6 or earlier). Others who need one may be able to build a usable xorg.conf by starting with the output from 'X -configure', or build the bits needed into /etc/X11/xinit.d/. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." In a recent thread, I was given this to put xrandr --output default --mode 1440x900 --preferred in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc Or whatever your preferences are. Hello, Some sort advice I got from this mailing list a week or so ago.. Go to runlevel 1 using init 1 and then type X -configure The x server will create you a xorg.conf corresponding to the automagic guess and then you can try to modify that xorg.conf file. Remember to put it as always to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Cheers, Sampsa On Sunday 25 July 2010 11:31:41 am James Hatridge wrote:

And perhaps reuse some lines from the old one, like monitor class and modelines. I think that if it is not using the correct resolution it is because it thinks the monitor doesn't have it, and it is guessing wrong. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
