Hello, Kirk. Have you run the Compaq diagnostics to make sure the hardware is good ? You can download the floppy based version from the HP support website, or if you have a 4.x or 5.x SmartStart, they can be run from there. I think it has been dropped from the new HP SmartStart 6.x CDs. I have had a good deal of luck in the past using the SmartStart CD to detect and configure the hardware, and you can even tell it that you'll be putting Linux on it as part of the installation routine. Once SmartStart finishes doing its thing, it'll prompt you to put in the Linux CD and you do a normal install from there. Post install, you might want to consider enabling or disabling apic in the bootloader if you continue to have problems. Oh, yeah, SmartStart will also allow you to wipe any current configuration, and will install a system partition for you with lots of tools and utilities related to the hardware. When you install the bootloader (LILO or GRUB) they should automatically add an entry for this Diagnostic Partition. Make sure you don't tell the install to use the whole drive though, otherwise you'll lose the Diag partition. Also check that you have all the latest firmware updates for the hardware. Again, a quick trip to the HP support site will give you everything you need. And I see there are some updated bootdisks on the SuSE FTP site that might also be worth a try instead of booting directly from the CD. Good luck, Stuart. -----Original Message----- From: Kirk Moore @ Speakeasy [mailto:mouserkm@speakeasy.net] Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2003 02:26 To: suse-linux-e Subject: [SLE] Compaq 1850r Ok, I have two of these fine machines.
