[opensuse] 42.2 USB WiFi stalls during >100 Gbyte transfer
I NET-installed 42.2 on a new box, replaced the ethernet cable connection with a USB WiFi adapter, and tried to transfer 118 Gbytes of user data from an existing 13.1 box to the 42.2 box. Repeated attempts failed. Here are some of my results. Source machine: 13.1. Dell 690, 32 Gbytes memory, 4 cores, Kernel 3.12.62. Engenius USB EUB 9603 EXT WiFi adapter. Destination machine: 42.2. Dell T7500, 48 Gbytes memory, 12 cores, Kernel 4.4.27. Summary of tests ---------------- I tried three different USB WiFi adapters on the Destination machine, and with each adapter tried 10 times to transfer 118 Gbytes. 1. EnGenius USB EUB 9603 EXT, same as the source machine. lsusb: ID 1740:9603 Senao RTL8188S WLAN Adapter Successful transfers of 118 Gbytes of data: 0 Failed: 10. Min data transfer 5 Gbytes, Avg 11.6, Max 21 Gbytes. Notes: All tests failed with reboot needed to restore network connection. 2. Ubiquity WiFiStation lsusb: ID 0cf3:b002 Atheros Communications, Inc. Ubiquiti WiFiStation 802.11n [Atheros AR9271] Successful transfers of 118 Gbytes of data: 3 Min transfer time 415 min, Avg 594 min, Max 832 min. Failed: 7. Notes: In all cases, reboot needed to restore useful network connection. On 4 occasions rcnetwork restart allows "ping free.fr" but performance degraded. 3. TP-Link TL-WN722N lsusb: ID 0cf3:9271 Atheros Communications, Inc. AR9271 802.11n Successful transfers of 118 Gbytes of data: 10 Min transfer time 417 min, Avg 424 min, Max 429 min. Failed: 0. Notes: Consistently successful. Transfer rate = 4.6 Mbytes/sec. Additional attempts ------------------- An additional 4 attempts were abandoned when the source machine WiFi stalled. I made further tests using rsync and got similar results. An additional test was lost due to bug https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1009932 Comments on results ------------------- I am surprised by these results. Looking at the "useless" result of case 1, one is tempted to say "Engenius adapter is broken", but it's the same Engenius adapter which on the 13.1 box is capable of supporting the 10/10 success of case 3. It looks like a 42.2 problem, similar to bug https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=998307 "Bug 998307 - wifi (intel 8260) stops working and network need restart". See comment 6 "But it's been fixed in 4.8." Since that 4.8 fix won't apply to 42.2, it seems to me that a bug report is in order but I have little technical detail other than "heavy load". Cases 2 and 3 use the same Atheros AR9271, but the results are very different. Whether this is a hardware or a software problem I cannot say.
