Yes.

There are lots of things that don't work with nvidia that I'm finding such as crashes and unstable screens when running openoffice. I doubt nvidia will do anything about it and the issues are only with kde4. ...

I have built in nvidia GeForce 6100 and no recent problems with login. So do I and neither do I. I'm sure the OP has tried each and every way and every combination of 173.x.y.z uninstalling, installing from the 173.x.zee.m or whatever it's called.run etc. But it doesn't work for _him_. Like openoffice 4.1 and nvidia don't work for me. Thank you and everyone else for confirming that it is _his_ problem. No one has a clue what his nor my problem is. It's a nvidia issue because it doesn't happen of intel nor ati boxes. But then again why blame it on nvidia as it only happens with kde4 and then only with certain versions of qt. I had the same issue as the original poster. I had tried to update the NVIDIA driver, including editing xorg.conf and xinitrc as recommended by nvidia, and then decided it was not worth it. But in fact, I only commented out the lines in the .xinitrc file (which now only contain one commented line and nothing else. That prevents kdm (and gdm) from logging me in, even though "startx startkde" was working fine.
