[opensuse] Compiz/KDE4
Hello listmates. I've got 11.3 up and running happily on my ThinkPad T61p (nVidia) and all is well except that while running Compiz I can't get the desktop to be transparent - I'd like to be able to see the other desktops on the cube and any thing like gears or fish on the inside. I've installed the full ccsm utility and have adjusted the opacity while not rotating setting to where I'm used to having it, but no setting produces anything other than 100% opacity for the desktop. Is there anyone here who can think of what I might be doing wrong? Does one of the new KDE features keep the desktop from being transparent? While I've got your attention on Compiz, does anyone know what happened to the fish, and the window burn animation? I've installed all the Compiz extras and these are still missing. aTdHvAaNnKcSe -- JAY VOLLMER Il n'y a aucune honte en étant un paria! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why are you trying to use Compiz with KDE4 rather than KDE's own window manager (kwin)? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That goes without saying. The kde4 desktop effect pale in comparison to the fluid elegance of compiz. The timings, accelerations, decelerations, and kinematic properties of the desktop effects are really just hacks by comparison. Compiz WM has many more times the experience (and code) in the effects that does kde4 -- which was nothing more than "I want to be compiz too." Granted, DE's are getting better, but there is still no comparison. That is before you get to the issue of useful plugins.... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I've used both, incl Compiz on (early) KDE4. This category is near the top in terms of subjectivity. I confess to have been initially enthralled, but after a while I throttled way back to the compositing features that really contribute to productivity so I can use either. But my preference is the tighter integration of Kwin. On the other hand, the wife demanded I disable compositing altogether. All in the eye of the beholder. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I know it's stupid, but I'm especially concerned because I want my fishies back. In case anyone was wondering: I've named the big one 'bitey'. On Wed, Aug 4, 2010 at 9:44 AM, dwgallien <dwgallien@gmail.com> wrote:

I am using Kwin. Kwin used to allow me a transparent cube (pre 11.3,) but no more - hence my inquiry. On Tue, Aug 3, 2010 at 4:47 PM, dwgallien <dwgallien@gmail.com> wrote:

It works for me (predictable, I know) - did you try changing the translucency slider in the KWin Desktop Cube effect's settings? Right. I haven't upgraded to 11.3 yet, but I have been using Factory w/KDE 4.4.5. So under the Cube configuration there is no Opacity setting? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I do want to kill my old on-board intel graphic card on my 11.2 oS and I mostly use Gnome. But if I open the ccsm (CompizConfig Settings Mangager) there is not only the option to check or uncheck the "[ ]" in front of "Enable Desktop Cube" but also the possibility to click *on the text* "Enable Desktop Cube". If I do that there is the register "Transparent Cube" with settings for opacity during and without rotation and for mouse rotation. Is this what your (Jay) were looking for? Jay, It sounds like you are experiencing problems with "compositing" itself. Recall, Gnome itself has the ability to enable/disable "compositing" so that may be an issue. (I can't recall exactly where that setting is at the moment -- perhaps in gconf-editor -> metacity) The other thing you will want to look at is you video card module. (your xf86-video-whatevercard) If you do not have the correct module loading for your card, that may have an influence on compositing as well. (although module problems generally result in the whitescreen of death, but it is something to check) Your compiz settings are correct. The setting: ccsm -> Desktop Cube -> Transparent Cube -> Opacity During Rotation is the setting that controls the cube opacity that you are talking about. I generally run it between 40%-60% depending on the amount of desktop I want visible. You will be able to see all the way through the cube/cylinder/sphere with any setting in that range if compositing is working correctly. Another issue worth checking is to make sure you are getting all your compiz packages from the same place. There are two repositories with different versions of compiz in them that are maintained by two different people. They are: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Compiz/ (by Dominique) http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/ (by J. aka CyberOrg) You may want to try completely removing the compiz you have installed and loading all fresh copies from one repo or the other. (both are at 8.6 at present) Note, you can use the 'fusion-icon' package from XGL with the compiz packages from 'Compiz', but don't mix the actual compiz packages or the libraries. Emerald decorator will work with compiz from either repo. To wipe compiz and start over, just use: rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep "compiz\|ccsm\|fusion\|emerald") You will get one or two more dependencies that you can either add to the command line to remove, or, I just add the --nodeps option since I'm about to reinstall the same packages anyway. I'll be that once you get a consistent install of compiz, the compositing will work like it should. P.S. -- I running the packages from the 'Compiz' repo right now... Good luck. -- David C.
