[opensuse] Where's my addressbook?
I originally posted this in opensuse-kde, but it's very quiet over there, and there seems to be a lot of discussion about KDE4 going on here, so... I've started playing with KDE4, and I've managed to get Kmail4 to see my Mailboxes. How do I find my KDE3 list of Contacts? How do I load my KDE3 calendar? I don't want to have to recreate all this stuff. In fact, I'd like Kontact and Kontact/KDE3 to both use the same databases. -- Bob Registered Linux User #463880 FSFE Member #1300 GPG-FP: A6C1 457C 6DBA B13E 5524 F703 D12A FB79 926B 994E openSUSE 11.0, Kernel 2.6.25.5-1.1-default, KDE 3.5.9 Intel Celeron 2.53GB, 2GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 7600GS -- Bob Registered Linux User #463880 FSFE Member #1300 GPG-FP: A6C1 457C 6DBA B13E 5524 F703 D12A FB79 926B 994E openSUSE 11.0, Kernel 2.6.25.5-1.1-default, KDE 3.5.9 Intel Celeron 2.53GB, 2GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 7600GS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Regarding the calendar, have you given any thought to Mozilla Sunbird? It's a really sweet application. We have our calendars here on a nfs/smb share, so we can view and modify them from any of our network machines. There's even an option to host them on an Apache server, so they can be accessible from anywhere. This doesn't answer all your other needs, of course, but I wanted to mention Sunbird (and its Thunderbird add-in, Lightning). It's worked extremely well for us here. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I use Tbird and Lightning at work, in a Windows environment, and they're good, but here I'm using Kontact. Migrating to a different Calendar/Mail/Address book app would give me the same problem of rebuilding all my data over again. One does not necessarily have to rewrite all the data... Most mail clients address books and calendar software have export or synchronisation options. Thunderbird by default uses ldif (but there is an extension with gives some VCard v2 export/import functionality). KMail/Kontact will export/import a range of formats. One can export from one client and import to another. It is not uncommon to use synchronisation to maintain ones address books and calendars across a number of different platforms (e.g. Mobile Phone, PDA, laptop, Home and Work desktops and different OSs ). The main problem is mapping source and target data fields. This is something of a moving target and some applications (e.g. Evolution) have some additional fields which may needed to be set to make the data accessible within the application in a usable manner. (I wrote a script sometime ago to handle this on a general level if a sync server was unavailable). - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. Make certain that you have backups of all important files.
How do I find my KDE3 list of Contacts?
Edit the contacts resource and set ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf as the location.
How do I load my KDE3 calendar?
Edit the calendar resource and set ~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer/std.ics as the location.
I don't want to have to recreate all this stuff. In fact, I'd like Kontact and Kontact/KDE3 to both use the same databases.
The above will ensure this, I'm not sure if it's a good idea though.

Interesting. Why not? -- Bob Registered Linux User #463880 FSFE Member #1300 GPG-FP: A6C1 457C 6DBA B13E 5524 F703 D12A FB79 926B 994E openSUSE 11.0, Kernel 2.6.25.5-1.1-default, KDE 3.5.9 Intel Celeron 2.53GB, 2GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 7600GS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Interesting. Why not?
These resources are used by many applications indirectly. I don't know whether locking works between KDE3 and KDE4 applications, if it doesn't and you launch them both you might have problems. A KDE developer should be able to answer this with more certainty.
