[SLE] Installing a new kernel for SuSE64.
I wonder if someone could give me a little hand here. I am not sure I am doing things right with respect to getting a new kernel installed in my SuSE6.4 installation. In fact I am not even sure where to get the appropriate files. But, here is what I did.. I picked up a number of files at : http://download.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/suse_update/6.4/jerbek-2.2.16 Not sure which ones were the right ones so I got them all. I then ran rpm -i on the file called k_deflt. I may have spelled it wrong but it seemed to be a good one to try. This process created a new directory on /usr/src/, called linux-2.2.16.SuSE with a sym link to it called 'linux'. I noticed as well that it created a new in /lib/modules, called 2.2.16. Well, all this sorta told me that this was it. The kernel was installed and all I would have to do would be to run lilo and that would be it. Maybe even amend the lilo.conf file too. Not sure. But first I went over to the directory: /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/ to find bzImage. It was not there. I was going to copy it over to /boot but now I couldn't. No file! So, not knowing where this file was located, I went ahead and went back to /usr/src/linux and ran 'make menuconfig' and set out the options I wanted in the configuration and then ran: make dep clean bzImage && make modules modules_install. That all went well and with that I copied /usr/src/linuxSystem.map , and /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage to /boot. I then adjusted the /etc/lilo.conf file to include this new kernel and then ran lilo. I rebooted and it all came up. More or less. The sound doesn't work yet but that is a config problme of some sort. The network does so I am nearly there. Please tell me some one, if I have done this right, or does SuSE do things differently. Was I supposed to make up a new .config file, as I did when I typed in make menuconfig. Was I supposed to go and move the System.map and bzImage files over to /boot. Was I supposed to run 'lilo'. ?? And did I chose the right file k_deflt?? As SuSE 6.4 does have more than one choice of boot manager (lilo and choos), make install will not copy the boot file to the /boot directory. You will need to do it manually and then run lilo. When you install the kernel.rpm, it also creates a file in /boot, calles kernel.config, which is the .config file you need to compile. Copy it to /usr/src/linux and when you do a make menuconfig, it will work. To configure sound and network, use the YaST2, and it shoud work. Ted Gervais wrote:

Or just edit the Makefile to put the new kernel image in /boot, and do: make menuconfig --> customize the kernel make dep make clean make bzlilo (which will compile the kernel and automatically run LILO) make moduls make modules_install.
To configure sound and network, use the YaST2, and it shoud work.

I don't think so. I believe that feature will be available in the 2.2.4 kernel, but that kernel won't be in SuSE 7.0. Christopher Reimer On Fri, 8 Sep 2000, Linux News User wrote:

You are wrong. SuSE Linux 7.0 supports files larger then 2GB. We have backported the code from 2.4 kernel. Which also means, since it was not complete at that time, our support is also not complete. File locking is missing. Thorsten

What does Gnome have to do with this? Been using Gnome for a while...networking is networking. If you want little cute system sounds you have to use either KDE's control centre or Gnomes. ;D --> -->> To configure sound and network, use the YaST2, and it shoud work. --> -->Unless you're using GNOME. 8) --> -- Cheers, Ben Rosenberg Precision LINUX :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: SuSE Inc.
