Am I correct in assuming that these files for a kernel should always be downloaded as a 'set' for any version of a kernel? And here I am taking only the kernel-desktop as my example: 1. kernel-desktop 2. kernel-desktop-development 3. kernel-development (from the no-arch repo) 4. kernel-firmware (from the no-arch repo) Reasons for my question are: * I use the ...Kernel:/stable/standard repo for my kernels and using this I updated my kernel to 3.12.0-1 this morning but this did not update the file kernel-firmware even though a later version is showing in YaST; * Patrick mentioned that Tumbleweed is using kernel 3.12.0-34.2 - which I just downloaded. But before installing it I wanted to make sure that I need all of the 4 files I mention above so as not to zonk my 13.1 RC2. Thanks for advice. They are called kernel-desktop-devel and kernel-devel ... at least here :) You need -devel if you are going to build external modules for this kernel. And yes, they should match.
4. kernel-firmware (from the no-arch repo)
This is not tied to specific kernel version, although drivers in newer kernel may require newer firmware. Having latest version should not harm.
Reasons for my question are:

You need to allow vendor switch. Not sure how to do it with yast. Using zypper with explicit version will do it.

Coincidentally they are also called that here :-) . I just cannot help myself to automatically say the full word for the abbreviated 'devel' :-) .

Thanks for this.

There is, under the Options tab, the ability to Allow vendor change in YaST. Once used and then disabled the next time an update has to be done it will use the changed vendor as the source for the update. Otherwise, I believe, one can end up in a merry-go-round of having the vendor changed....... But this first requires that the name of the repo/source of the file be added to the list of repos in YaST's list of repositories (as well as giving it the appropriate Priority level). Going the zypper way sounds less complicated - if one knows how to use properly that is.

Apart from the above 4 files there has to be another one to do with modules tools or something - but I cannot put my finger on it. I tried to apply the 3.12.0-34 kernel which Patrick mentioned to my "outdated" oS 12.2 installation and during the install there was a dependency error to do with modules tools. I ignored it and went ahead with the install and now 12.2 won't boot. Does anyone know what this 'modules tools' rpm is, please? [While on this subject, does mkinitrd also have to match the version of the kernel being installed?] BC -- Using openSUSE 13.1, KDE 4.11.2 & kernel 3.12.0-1 on a system with- AMD FX 8-core 3.6/4.2GHz processor 16GB PC14900/1866MHz Quad Channel Corsair "Vengeance" RAM Gigabyte AMD3+ m/board; Gigabyte nVidia GTX660 OC 2GB DDR5 GPU -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
