Re: [SLE] Trouble installing SUSE 9.3
I did not know about the floppy= parameters - thanks for pointing it out. I still get the error: "Boot failed: please change disks and press a key to continue." Pressing a key does nothing. I goggled the floppy= parameter and tried ALL the possible settings -same error every time. I even tried floppy=debug and got nothing new. I tried all the above with and without quotes "". I am going to buy a second new box of floppies. The Office Depot near me only sells their brand and I may need better floppies. Has anyone else had to switch floppy brands to get this to work? The floppies pass verify on my linux box, but that does not mean they are prefect. I seem to remember that the device drivers for floppies sometimes will try to read several times before giving up and maybe on the setup disk every thing has to work the first time. Yeah. I saw both already. Again no luck. I might be able to install debian by following the directions listed, but as far as I can tell he just takes the normal debian floppies and hacks in usb drivers for the cdrom and floppy. Maybe this was back when usb was new. Now days linux should have no problem with usb cdrom drives and floppies. I think I could install mandrake 9.2, but I am tring to install SUSE 9.3. Rafe

Ouch!!! I've been all over google and I either don't know the right question(s) or my problem is not listed. I've visited a lot of the sites from your link. I can keep looking, but I am starting to think that I am doing something very basic wrong. Most sites say that linux should install on a thinkpad with no problems. I am using a usb teac floppy drive and a Lite-on it corp cdrom/dvd drive. Windows xp has no trouble finding either floppy or cdrom drive. I have installed linux many times, but I must admit I am used to everything working well at this stage of the install. The problems come in at the config stage. Windows xp installed on the laptop with no problems - so I think the hardware is ok. I just ftped the bootdisks to the laptop and used rawwrite for windows from the laptop to create the boot floppies -same error message: Boot failed: please change disks and press a key to continue. Pressing a key does nothing. I've read on google that some people with this error had luck with a different floppy disk. So this error is sometimes given for bad floppies, but that does not seem to be my problem. Again I think I am doing something very simple wrong, but I am just not able to see it. Rafe

No problem. It just makes it easier to read when someone searches the archives.

After creating the floppies can you mount them and see the files on them? Also, if using dd to create them try using bs=1024 to set the block size. It may help. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Yes I can mount the disk and see a readme file saying that it is linux bootdisk or something like that. I tried the bs=1024 and got the same error message: Boot failed: please change disk and press a key to continue. I think I'v been working on this too long and am not thinking clearly. Rafe
