RE: [SLE] Best way to reformat a disk?
Hi Trey
From: Trey [mailto:urlik.skarsol@verizon.net] Hello, I'm only familar with formatting in Windows. I have a area of my 2nd drive partioined/formated with old data I no longer need. Rather than just delete the tons of files/folders, I just figured I'd reformat it.
Try "mkfs" (make filesystem) which reformats your partition. It's the equivalent to "format" under DOS/Windows
I don't want to change its fstab entry, or repartion it. Should this be done in yast2? If so how? Or is the CL better? If so how?
But " rm -rf /path/to/directory/* " will do ;-) (ATTENTION!!! after this command, all files and directories from /path/to/directory are gone!)
Thanks in advance, -Trey
cheers, Stefan

Ok, I access the mounted partition as 'file:/data2' in Konqueror. So does that mean I can just type at the prompt: 'mkfs /data2' which is the mount point, or should it be the device entry 'mkfs /dev/hdb3' Will that reformat the drive in the same way. ie ext3 or reiser? Or can I change that w/the format command? Thanks, -Trey

It is far easier to use Yast. Yast -> system -> Partitioner Just make sure the partion you want to format is not mounted, and check /etc/fstab before and after formating. If you do not specify a mount point when you format the partition there will be no entry in /etc/fstab. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------
