[SLE] KDE supplementary yast-source discontinued?
Hi, I used to update my KDE and GNOME by adding yast-source paths from various suse mirror servers to my instalation sources list in Yast... One example is this: ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.3/yast-source Other ones, similar to the above, were available for 10.0, and both for 32 and for 64bit... I assume many members of this list know and use this. BTW I myself learned that from this list some time ago... Now (and it started from May 26th as far as I noticed) all the mirrors, one by one, started removing the KDE update directory structures. There is a README file put instead, pointing to some open suse repositiries. But, these repositories are not formaly structured in the way that is acceptable by Yast as a valid yast-source, so I can not use Yast for this purpose any more. So, what we have here? One fine fully-functional and very convenient mechanism for upgrading if discontinued, with no adequate substitute given. And, yes, this is true *for KDE only*. Because, in the same time, yast-sources for GNOME continued to work in the old fashioned way... (at least whithin last week or so)... Does it have anything to do with the "gnome orienation" declared by Novell some time ago? I understood that it meant just putting more support in the gnome branch comparing to the kde one - not explicit crippling of the kde support and putting blocking obstacles in the way of kde users... Or is it just first move in the direction of replacing yast updater with something new (as I see it is happening with 10.1 right now)??? As a user who *bought* at least one box (mostly two) of each from the following list (6.3, 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 7.3, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, 9.0, 9.1, 9.3 and 10.0) and who took the freedom to choose kde instead of gnome - I feel *very bad* now. Or, it is me who missed something obvious? Any comments....suse people on the list anyone... I am sorry to say this but not only that I didn't miss it but I explicitly mentioned it in my OP as the crucial part of the problem... Just read the 3rd paragraph of my OP again and you'll see. And yes I didn't mention that I don't use 10.1 yet... Just 9.3 and 10.0 (32 and 64bit) Namely, this README file points to the repository that is not useable by Yast any more, at least not in the old way or in any other way I managed to recognize and understand. The old way was good for me and my kde/gnome stuff on 9.3, 10.0 and 10.0_amd64. I had only to refresh and just run software install after it. It used to print all the updated versions in blue so I could easily mark them (with gray +) and install everything with a click of a button... Now it only works for gnome... KDE is gone. That was my point... As far as I can see now all I can do is d/l everything from the new repositories and do the whole update job manually - rpm everything on my own, then delete source files on my own, not to mention taking account of the versions, dependencies etc... Is *that* the new way for kde users? If not, then what and how? Thanks again. I use 10.0 and the new repository is usable. You can simply add it to the Yast sources. You'll get an error message, but you can say "continue anyway" (sorry, I have the german version, don't know the original messages). Then when you start Yast's install part it just works. But I have some (smaller) problems wth the new KDE 3.5.3, so maybe first follow the list a while to see, if I'm the only one :-) Daniel -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Switzerland professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com special interest site: http://www.bauer-nudes.com -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Thank you, Daniel. Your answer encouraged me to experiment further and now I managed to do it with my 10.0.... But, it seems that for 9.3 it definitely will not be possible, so I'll investigate this 'smart' stuff that they recommend. So I was wrong in regard of 'no adequate substitute'... I am sorry for my quick triggering. Really, now it seems that *there is* some substitute, although with a little annoyance included... But the feeling that kde users are singled out is still there to stay. I cant' help it.
