I have a Wingman extreme digital 3D, and it worked out of the box, doing nothing (no installing) in suse 8.2. Astonishing, easier than windows. There was a way to find out the list of supported joystick, but I can't remember where... ah, I found it. View file '/usr/share/YaST2/include/sound/joysticks.ycp' it contains the list of joysticks yast knows about.
