[S.u.S.E. Linux] 2.0.34-patch
<PRE> Now that the 2.0.34 patch is out.. any idea how long before SuSE will have a patch to their brand of kernel source? The patch doesn't apply very nicely over linux-2.0.33.pre.SuSE..etc source. I thought I had just screwed up when I tried to apply it. It didn't work well on my system either. Hopefully SuSE will just put it up on the site. Seems alot of people are having probs with this one. The Gecko wrote:

There's no need to do so. de-install the package "lx_suse", install the package "linux" and apply the official kernel patch by Linus. Please, read the package descriptions carefully via F2 inside YaST. Anyway, if you've ftp'ed the whole kernel source, that's also okay. Nice weekend, Karl -- Karl Eichwalder S.u.S.E. There's no need to do so. de-install the package "lx_suse", install the package "linux" and apply the official kernel patch by Linus. I actually tried that, too. Didn't work -- but I think the patch was corrupted

Well, the patch is meant against an unpatched 2.0.33 kernel tree. The SuSE version is patched to hell and back (including new stuff like Soundblaster AWE support), so of course it won't patch nicely. Now, it may just be that the features you want are all in the 2.0.34, look at the changes file. In that case go and install the normal kernel sources (unless they are installed already), cd /usr/src/linux-2.0.33 (where the unpatched kernel is) and patch -p1 < patch-2.0.34 2>/tmp/errors. -p1 because the patches are customarily for linux/path_to_file/file and linux points (currently) to the 2.0.33-SuSE ... so we want to strip the 'linux/' part. Then /tmp/errors should contain no patch failed or similar. (Or, if you are unsure, D/L the complete 3.0.34 and check it against what you patched.) -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key". If someone actually look in the changes file, can they post the S.u.S.E. relevant parts here? I'm thinking about the ISDN-specific patches against problems with dynamic IP addresses, others may have other interests. I don't want to download 2.0.34 just to find out that it wont help me any. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

You could just look at the diff file, it's human readable, or you could go to <A HREF="http://www.linuxhq.com/v20patch/patch-2.0.34/"><A HREF="http://www.linuxhq.com/v20patch/patch-2.0.34/</A">http://www.linuxhq.com/v20patch/patch-2.0.34/</A</A>> specifically to <A HREF="http://www.linuxhq.com/v20patch/patch-2.0.34/linux_Documentation_Changes.html"><A HREF="http://www.linuxhq.com/v20patch/patch-2.0.34/linux_Documentation_Changes.html</A">http://www.linuxhq.com/v20patch/patch-2.0.34/linux_Documentation_Changes.html</A</A>> In your case, it seems no ISDN things are mentioned in the changes, and only linux/drivers/isdn/avmb1/capiutil.c (8 lines) linux/drivers/isdn/isdn_net.c (45 lines) linux/drivers/isdn/sc/includes.h (7 lines) were patched a bit. -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key".
