[SLE] Installing 6.1 (forwarded)
I gave my old 6.1 SuSE disks to a friend to introduce him to the wonderfull world of Linux. He is trying to install but he says that SuSE install is not seeing his CD Rom. Excerpt of his email to me: ------------------------------- Hi Sean, The card is an isa WDH-7001c for Mitsumi/Sony/Panasonic double speed drives, and the CD rom is a Panasonic 562-J. Card can be jumpered for different io addresses, mine is set at 300H but it can be set at 310h,320h or 330h, irq 9/10/11 mine is set at irq 11 for the card, CD Rom is set at irq3 dma3 afair.. --------------------------------- I am unable to offer him any help, throwing it open to the list in case anyone has see the same problem. Off to try and install 6.3 on a laptop with no CD Rom :) Sean -- Linux User: #124682 ICQ: 679813 My Current Uptime is 5d, 13h and 27m on Linux 2.2.15 ...You know it's going to be a bad day when you forget your new password. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
You will have to load the special modules for these soundcard based cdroms. Another floppy is needed. "modules" Funn!! Sean Rima wrote:

You can find the images of the boot/modules disks on the first CD. Ciao, Stefan -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

No, it won't, but that shouldn't be a problem. All your friend has to do is look on the first SuSE CDROM - in the disks directory he should find a disk image for the modules disk (and all other disks). All that then needs to be done is to use 'dd' (under Linux) or 'rawrite' (under DOS - it's on the CDs) to write the disk image to a blank floppy. I hope the rest of the install goes OK, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Thanks, I will forward him your message and if he gets going will mail the result back to the list.

Do you have a network card in the laptop? If you do, I found the easiest way was via an NFS install (after I eventually got around to putting a second network card in my PC for the internal network...). It's a simple case of hook 'em up, edit /etc/exports on the host, start the NFS server, and install away ;-) Have fun, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
