I recently added a 2nd nic to my pc to create a firewall/gateway and experienced a similar situation. Improper configuration on the firewall caused the external nic not to get connected to the dhcp server of my isp. After timing out the first time, the external nic would not establish a connection to the dhcp server even after I disabled the firewall and rebooted. The resolution was I had to shutdown, remove the internal (not the external) nic, reboot (causing linux to spit out errors reporting no device, etc.). I then shutdown again, re-inserted the internal nic, rebooted (w/o the firewall) and my external nic would then get connected to the dhcp server and get an ip. After making sure my firewall config allowed connection to the dhcp server I restarted the firewall and now everything works on bootup. I have been able to repeat this scenario consistently. I don't know if the nics make the difference or what. I am using a Farallon 10baseT nic for external connection (ne2k-pci driver) and a Lynksys 10/100TX nic (tulip driver) for the internal connection. I have SuSE 6.4 installed w/ ipchains, masquerading turned on. I would suggest the user try removing/reinserting the nics and make sure no firewall rules are blocking connection to the dhcp (if this is the case).
Stuart

--- Maurizio Firmani <m.firmani@sirio.regione.lazio.it> wrote:
What do you mean with "looses the gateway"? I have a system with two nics, SuSE 7.0 and all the packets travels back and forth. Did you execute the command:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
You can also set it in /etc/rc.config to execute it at boot time.
Maurizio
I
I have installed suse 7.0 on my system and i have tried to add another card after i select the driver and configure its
ipsettings
from yast and reboot the system, it looses the gateway
can some one tell me how to add another nic without loosing the gatway so that the system would boot and enable and use both nic??
