Apologies for what's, probably, another basic question. I've recently installed SuSE 8.0 on my PC. Included with that installation was mysql. I've just tried to configure the mysql server and ran into some real problems. Following the manual, which I didn't find too straight forward, I ran the script to set up the database and it didn't report any errors. According to the manual I should be able to run safe_mysqld and the service should start. No such luck. The error reported mentioned it couldn't find a file that is located in the directory that Yast2 installed mysql to (/var/lib/mysql I think). I then tried running mysqld-max this reported an error saying the mysql-socket file couldn't be found and it wasn't lying. I couldn't find in the manual any mention of how to create this file and it definitely didn't mention it in the post installation section. Can anybody throw any light on what I've missed. I've been left pulling my hair out. Thanks in advance. Martin Horton

On 7.2 you start mysql with "rcmysql start", I'm not sure what 8.0 uses. Probably something with "innserv mysql" ? -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
